West Torrens Council will formally oppose plans for a six-storey apartment building on a suburban street in Plympton.

The council this week voted to write to the State Commission Assessment Plan (SCAP), expressing its strong opposition to the 35-apartment complex proposed for Glenburnie Tce.

Despite being a suburban street, the block is zoned as an “urban corridor” and is subject to the same height restriction as Anzac Highway, which allows a maximum of eight storeys.

A number of residents opposed the plans when they were initially lodged in August last year.

At the time, West Torrens councillor Simon Tsiaparis labelled the development “unsightly” and “definitely not” appropriate for its location.

On Tuesday night, Cr Tsiaparis successfully pushed for the council to write to the SCAP opposing the development.

He said allowing the complex could set a precedence for multistorey buildings to take over the street.

“Six storeys on a suburban street, whether it’s an urban corridor zone or not, is just too much,” Cr Tsiaparis said.

“In the report the developer put to SCAP, they had a vision of what other potential buildings could look like in the area.

“It would be a concrete jungle of apartments that will overtake an area that is predominantly single-storey dwellings.”

An extra three apartments were added to plans for the building in March this year.

The size of each apartment was also increased, meaning one fewer apartment could be accommodated on each level, so the developer – Plympton Apartments Pty Ltd – introduced a sixth floor to the project.

But, in June, the SCAP refused the developer’s plan for the site, saying it was an overdevelopment.

Plympton Apartments will meet with the SCAP and can also appeal the decision to the Environment, Resources and Development Court.
