New Aldi, Chemist Warehouse proposed for Clovelly Park

THREE houses and a business at Clovelly Park may be bulldozed to make way for a $6.4 million Aldi supermarket and Chemist Warehouse.
Plans have been submitted to State Planning Assessment Panel for the current Chemist Warehouse site, about 100m south of Daws Rd.
The proposal, submitted by Nielsen Architects, included a 1732sq m supermarket, a new chemist and 117 carparks to be shared by both businesses.
Two homes on Norrie Ave and one house on Wingfield St — which were rental properties — as well as a vacant residential block on the corner of both streets are owned by Chemist Warehouse.
The single-storey Aldi supermarket would be built on the corner of Wingfield St and Norrie Ave, with the carpark fronting South Rd.
The supermarket is expected to employ 25 workers.
The current Chemist Warehouse and discount grocery store Rite Price, which is part of the same building, would be demolished at a later stage of the construction, under the proposal.
The adjacent Southern Clinic Medical Centre, Clovelly Park Surgery, bakery, hairdresser and Vietnamese restaurant were not part of the construction plan.
Nearby business owners told CoastCity Weekly they were pleased at the prospect of an Aldi in the neighbourhood.
A statement to the planning commission said the new investment would “lift the amenity of the area and improve what is currently a relatively dilapidated site”.
Chemist Warehouse did not respond to questions from CoastCity Weekly.
Owners of adjacent homes and businesses have been notified.
Consultation on the proposal closes on October 4.
