ALDI wants to build a new $6.8m supermarket and shopping centre in the heart of Salisbury.

An application to build the shops — on Park Tce — has been lodged with the State Commission Assessment Panel.

A large home and two trees at the site would have to be demolished and removed to make way for the group of shops.

Four tenancies would be available in the centre with “associated signage, carparking, earthworks and landscaping to be developed in three stages”, the application states.

If permitted, the supermarket would be built next to Benson Radiology and across the road from fast-food restaurants and a carpark, which overlook the corner of Park Tce and Wiltshire St.

An Aldi Australia spokeswoman said the new store would cover about 1800sq m with about 1200sq m of retail space.

“Features will include expanded wooden produce bays, energy-efficient chillers and a modern store design,” the spokeswoman said.

“Since opening our first South Australian stores in February, 2016, we have continued to experience great success and growth across the state.

“Our success in the northern suburbs is reflective of the support we receive.”

Land in the north has been a big hit with international supermarket giants because of readily available space.

The Northern Weekly last month confirmed Kaufland would build its first northern suburbs shopping centre at the old Munno Para Bowls Club site, worth $23.8 million.

Aldi already has stores at Parafield Gardens, Blakeview, Smithfield and Evanston.

The company employees about 500 people and has long-term plans to have up to 50 stores operating across the state.

About $290 million worth of investment has been approved in Playford this financial year.

More than 1300 developments have been approved with almost 80 other projects pending.
