A SEVEN-STOREY apartment and shopping complex would tower over Magill Rd under plans for a major transformation of the old Caroma factory.
Developers Catcorp and Buildtec, with supermarket chain Aldi, last week lodged an application with the State Commission Assessment Panel to redevelop the prominent Norwood site.
The redevelopment of 76 Magill Rd would feature a seven-storey apartment building with five “tower elements”, according to documents lodged with the commission.
A further 33 two- and three-storey houses, as well as a supermarket, restaurants and “speciality” stores are planned for the 2ha site.
Former planning minister John Rau last year signed off on a rezoning of the Caroma property, paving the way for the consortium to push ahead with its plans for an $80 million redevelopment of the site.
The Eastern Courier Messenger in January reported Catcorp director Anthony Catinari had “secured” the old bathroom fixtures factory, which closed its doors early last year after 76 years in operation.
Mr Catinari last week declined to comment on the consortium’s plans for the site, which is still owned by State Government agency Renewal SA.
Urban Development Institute of Australia (SA) executive director Pat Gerace said a redevelopment of the factory was a “no-brainer”.
“It won’t just benefit the residents living in the development, but the community as well,” Mr Gerace said.
“Young people will get jobs in the supermarket, shops and restaurant and it will improve the overall amenity of the area.”
