Metropolitan Fresh Findon has been voted the best greengrocer in SA, followed by Adelaide Fresh Fruiterers, in Morphett Vale, and Hahndorf Fruit and Veg in the Hills.
Metropolitan Fresh Findon manager Jessica Clift said the store’s great service, loyal customers and its support for local producers had kept it going strong since 1989.
“We do everything we can to keep our customers coming back, from the start of the shopping experience right to the end,” Mrs Clift said.
“Especially at times like this that we’re going through at the moment, we can’t thank our customers enough for coming to support our little family business that is growing.
“Without them, we would not be where we are today.”
Mrs Clift’s parents, Michael and Enza Manov, bought the store, in the Findon Shopping Centre, 31 years ago, when she was three months old.
“I grew up here and I’m still here,” she said. “I just love it.”
She said Metropolitan Fresh sold only the freshest fruit and veg.
“We pride ourselves that our produce is going to last in the fridge for a week minimum,” Mrs Clift said.
She said reality television cooking shows, particularly MasterChef, was behind a surge in customers wanting to experiment with new produce.
A recent episode had the contestants cooking with caulini – cauliflower with long edible stems and open florets.
Mrs Clift said the day after the episode aired customers were asking for caulini and within days, Metropolitan Fresh was selling it.
Tony and Mark’s led the vote in the eastern district, Schinella’s in Prospect topped the pool in the north and inner-north, Adelaide Fresh Fruiterers Morphett Vale in the south, and Veg Out, Victor Harbor, was the top greengrocer in country SA.
