Louis has brought sunshine into his family’s life at a time when they need it most.
The two-year-old knows just how to bring a smile to his parents’ faces and has a sense of humour “beyond his years”.
“I don’t know if that's just general cheekiness or if he is smarter than what I think,” his mum, Michelle Ranson said.
“I know everyone loves their child but he is just so special.”
The Ranson family have had a “tough” time over the past six months as Louis’s baby brother James has battled genetic illness, CASK syndrome with MICPCH.
The condition is very rare in boys as it targets the X chromosome which males only have one of.
“It means he has a small head and his brain didn’t develop properly,” Ms Ranson said.
“To me, it is one of the cruellest things that could ever happen to a child because it’s not just one aspect of their health, it’s a lot.”
James has spent much of his short life in and out of hospital with the life-limiting syndrome.
Fortunately, the little fighter has the best big brother in Louis.
“(Louis always makes) sure that there are dummies available because James likes to cry a bit and (Louis) loves to pat him and soothe him and basically likes to show up and cheer everyone up,” Ms Ranson said.
“Kids change dramatically once there is a second child in the family anyway … but he was kind of forced into childcare because of what’s going on with James and he has just taken it in his stride.
“He has developed ridiculously and he is better for it.”
Louis has also been a great support to his mum and dad.
“It is very tricky having a two year old and a six month old and juggling that in itself and also trying to please both is very hard,” the Everard Park mother said.
“(Louis) taps into your emotions he knows when you’re upset and he will just come over and sit on your lap and give you the love you need.
“With everything else going on as well you just realise how lucky you are to have one healthy child.”
As he continues to kick developmental goals, Louis has also taken home another prize after being named South Australia’s Cutest Toddler for 2025.
Ms Ranson said it is the win their family needed.
“It’s just so nice to have some good news to share with people,” the 43-year-old said.
“He is so loved and so special.”
