An Angle Park woman has been warned by a magistrate to dress more modestly for her next court appearance.

Dressed in a crop top and track pants, Jypsie Shae Hendrickson, 22, appeared in Port Adelaide Magistrates Court on Tuesday charged with the basic offence of dishonestly taking property without consent, the aggravated offence of assaulting a worker, as well as damaging a building or motor vehicle and failing to pay a legal fare for hiring a taxi.

Magistrate Jayanthi McGrath said her attire and manner was not appropriate for appearing in court.

“I’ll say to you from the word go, this is a court hearing, take your hands out of your pockets please. What you are wearing is not appropriate,” she said.

“When you come to court on the next occasion, you might not know what is appropriate, but you should not be showing any flesh.”

Hendrickson responded, saying “I’ll dress as a Muslim next time”. Magistrate McGrath told her there was no need to make comments like that and that it was not amusing.

“In relation to these matters you’re charged with theft, a theft that allegedly occurred on March 11 last year at Edwardstown. The allegations are that you’ve taken swimwear,” she said.

The police prosecutor said Hendrickson was also facing charges relating to assaulting a taxi driver and damaging his vehicle.

Hendrickson, who was self-represented, said she wanted to adjourn the matter to seek legal representation.

The matter will return to the Port Adelaide Magistrates Court on May 24.
