The woman who was hit by a car while taking out her mother’s bins is now out of her coma, while the driver has admitted his guilt in court.

In the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Monday, Elliot Joel McVicar, 25, pleaded guilty by video link to two counts of causing harm by dangerous driving and driving disqualified.

The shocking accident happened on March 21 when a Mazda driven by McVicar travelling north on Berrima Rd hit a Kia travelling south.

The car then hit Sian Kennedy, 29, before smashing into several other vehicles.

Sian’s mother, Liz Kennedy said Sian who was taken to hospital in a critical condition with double fractures to both legs, broken ribs and serious head injuries is now in an improved condition and out of her induced coma.

“It’s been a long four weeks but she’s working really hard,” Ms Kennedy said.

Ms Kennedy said Sian will hopefully start rehabilitation next week but it will be a long road to recovery.
She said she was glad to hear McVicar had pleaded guilty so Sian won’t have to go through a trial after she had already suffered so much.

“It’s a very small token in the right direction and I’m sure he (McVicar) will spend a lot of years paying for it in different ways,” she said.

Ms Kennedy she has been overwhelmed by the public’s contribution to Sian’s GoFundMe which has currently raised over $14,000.

“It’s an amazingly generous thing for the public to do and its going to make a real practical difference in Sian’s recovery,” Ms Kennedy said.

Ms Kennedy said Sian, who lives in Morphett Vale, was leaving after an evening visit the day of the “tragic” accident and was taking the bins out for her.

Within seconds, Ms Kennedy heard screams, bangs and yelling from the back of her yard.

Sian was rushed to Flinders Medical Centre where she was fighting for life and was in an induced coma until about two weeks ago.

In the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Monday, Magistrate David McLeod committed McVicar to the District Court in June.
