THE Brickworks chimney has been covered in scaffolding — but only so the historic structure can be worked on.
West Torrens Council is investing $1.5 million to restore the 1912-built stack,
off Ashwin Parade, at Torrensville.
The long-awaited project has now started.
The council’s general manager of urban services, Angelo Catinari, said the work on the chimney would continue until at least July.
He said once restored, the chimney would be reprinted with its original Hallett Bricks signage.
Mr Catinari said the chimney and scaffolding extended 42m into the air.
The council is restoring the chimney as part of a plan to eventually sell the adjoining Brickworks traders shed.
Eight such kilns were built in SA between 1882 and 1951.
The kiln was owned by well-known brick firm J Hallett and Son Ltd and is the only remaining one of its kind in SA.
