Adelaide’s new $65m shopping precinct at Brickworks Markets site open for business
AN iconic Adelaide marketplace has reopened after a $65-million revamp — the knick-knack, clothing and confectionery stalls replaced by a swag of trendy retail outlets. Here’s what’s inside ...
THE old Brickworks market at Torrensville has officially opened today — after a $65 million facelift.
A popular green grocer and a trendy, alfresco dining precinct are part of the new Brickworks Shopping Centre.
The mega new shopping precinct is on South Rd, Torrensville and is tipped to provide jobs for 600.
The shopping centre built in front of the iconic Brickworks’ chimney stack has been formally hailed open by Treasurer Tom Koutsantonis.
The 17,000 sq m market place includes a Woolworths supermarket, Big W and Dan Murphy’s.
It also has more than 40 speciality shops and 700 on-grade car parks — and proven favourite franchises such as Cibo.
“This major investment in Adelaide’s inner western suburbs has created more than 800 jobs, including 200 jobs during construction and more than 600 ongoing retail positions,” Mr Koutsantonis said.
“It’s a magnificent win for this area — giving local residents more choice and giving young people more job opportunities.
“We look forward to further private sector investment just like this in South Australia.
Construction began on the site, formerly home to the J. Hallett & Sons brickworks operation, in April last year after more than two years of planning.
Woolworths State Operations Manager Michelle White said the development has brought significant investment to the local area.
”Local residents will now have easy access to great retailers in a major shopping destination and community space,” she said.
Mr Koutsantonis said access to the development has been greatly improved by the State and Federal governments’ $10 million upgrade of the South Road and Ashwin Parade intersection, which was the first part of the Torrens to Torrens upgrade of South Road.
“These works included installing a roundabout into the main entrance of the Marketplace development,” he said
The new complex also has a Jeanswest, Flight Centre, Wok in a Box and Choice Pharmacy.
The northern end of the complex — next to the State Heritage-listed brick kiln — features an alfresco dining precinct, including popular eateries Burger Bar and Zambreros.
Popular family-owned greengrocer Tony & Marks are expanding their brand to the western suburbs after 35 years at stores in Newton and Glenunga.
Last month Paul Capobianco, whose father Mark co-founded the shop in 1978, revealed to the Weekly Times Messenger the Brickworks shop would feature a gourmet deli, florist and cafe.
“We had so many of our regular clients telling us to move to the western side of town,” Mr Capobianco, 25, said.
“We haven’t been located inside a big shopping precinct before and this is the largest of our stores so this is a very exciting venture.”
West Torrens chief executive Terry Buss said the council had chosen a preferred buyer for the Brickworks’ iconic kiln, but would not name them as contract negotiations were confidential.
The council sold the 4.8ha Brickworks market site to Woolworths in 2013.
West Torrens Mayor John Trainer said the development would draw shoppers from across Adelaide.
“(This project) has transformed an ugly eyesore into a modern shopping centre that is going to bring this section of the district to life,” Mr Trainer said.
