Holdfast Bay Council to build unisex changerooms at Glenelg Oval

New unisex changerooms will be built at Glenelg Oval, which will allow the precinct to host state and national events and encourage more girls to take up footy and cricket.

Women’s sport will be given a boost at Glenelg Oval, with unisex changerooms to be built in the precinct’s southwest corner.

Holdfast Bay Council has received a $487,000 State Government grant towards the changerooms, which will be used by male and female cricket and football players.

The Glenelg Football Club has received a $300,000 Federal Government grant for the project, and $200,000 has been earmarked from the council.

The new changerooms will increase female participation in football and cricket and allow the oval to host state and national events.

It comes more than three years after the oval’s 500-seat grandstand, which housed changerooms, had to be removed following storm damage.

Glenelg Football Club interim CEO Justin Scripps said the changerooms were “long overdue” and would help meet social distancing requirements during COVID.

“We don’t have adequate facilities to cope with what we have at the moment,” Mr Scripps said.

The changerooms are part of the second stage of the oval’s $20,000 million redevelopment – a joint project between the football club and the council.

Stage one is currently underway with the construction of a new clubroom at the Holdfast Tennis Club, along with new courts, improved lighting, carparking and landscaping.

That stage is expected to be completed by October 2020.

Under the rest of the project, the council will build a new two-court indoor sports centre at the corner of Brighton Rd and Rugless Tce and install a new playground, public toilets and half-court basketball court.

The scoreboard will also be replaced, and the council will introduce new cricket nets, indoor cricket and football gyms.

The work also includes upgrading the Glenelg Football Club function centre, offices and changerooms.
