A western suburbs council has committed $14 million to overhauling more than 120 parks and playgrounds.

Marion Council’s eight year plan to upgrade 97 parks and 27 playgrounds will commence this month.

The plan includes spending almost $3 million on a major overhaul of six reserves, including a $520,000 revamp of Glandore Community Centre Reserve.

This would include the installation of sports courts, fitness equipment and multi-use pathways.

“We are making it easier than ever for people to play and exercise outdoors,” Marion Mayor Kris Hanna said.

“Upgrades range from major works, such as building a new playground, to minor additions like a water fountain, bench, or landscaping.

“The level of improvements at a reserve are based on other facilities in the area and the needs of the local community.”

A further eight parks will be adapted to be dog-friendly.

The council will also install a trail of public artworks, bike repair stations, barbecue and picnic facilities.

Mr Hanna said the council hoped the long-term plan would improve access to open spaces for its residents.

“Marion Council is investing heavily to provide quality parks and playgrounds for family’s right across our city,” Mr Hanna said.

The plan is in addition to the council’s annual budget for maintenance on open spaces and its $2 million contribution to building an adventure playground at Glenthorne National Park.
