Work on the first stage of a $20 million revamp of Glenelg Oval is set to begin later this year.
It will see the redevelopment of the Holdfast Tennis Club, expected to be completed by next September.
Detailed designs for the club’s courts and clubrooms will be released by July, with contractors to be procured by this September.
Holdfast Bay Council received $15,000 from Tennis Australia for the project but was unsuccessful in its applications to the State and Federal governments.
The council was expected to stump up about $500,000 towards the upgrade of the tennis club, while the entire Glenelg Oval upgrade would cost $20 million.
Councillors endorsed and first put aside money for the upgrades in 2017.
It was understood the masterplan would have to be reassessed either late this year or early next year after the Glenelg Oval grandstand was removed following storm damage.
Holdfast Bay Mayor Amanda Wilson welcomed the tennis club upgrades, for which locals had waited “a long time”.
“The building is in need of a rebuild and the whole courts need to be modernised as well so it’ll be a great new asset,” Ms Wilson said.
She said the rest of the upgrades to Glenelg Oval were “the next big thing” on the council’s agenda.
Under the rest of the project, the council would build a new two-court indoor sports centre at the corner of Brighton Rd and Rugless Tce and install a new playground, public toilets and half-court basketball court.
The scoreboard would also be replaced, and the council would introduce new cricket nets, indoor cricket and football gyms.
The work also includes upgrading the Glenelg Football Club function centre, offices and changerooms.
Holdfast Tennis Club president Ann-Marie Hadjinicolaou has been contacted for comment.
