A MILLION-DOLLAR upgrade of Glenelg Oval is one step closer, after Holdfast Bay Council put funds towards a revived sporting precinct.

Last week, Holdfast Bay Council voted to spend $100,000 on concept plans.

Under those plans, Margaret Messenger Reserve would be upgraded, Holdfast Bay Tennis clubrooms would be redeveloped and eight of its tennis courts would be resurfaced.

A new off-street car park would also be built at Glenelg Primary School to help relieve parking problems on Williams Ave.

The total cost of the project is estimated at $1.19 million.

Holdfast Bay Tennis Club president Brian Wilson welcomed the decision.

“The clubrooms are very old and in very poor condition so that would be our number priority would be to have them rebuilt,” Mr Wilson said. “It is a step in the right direction.”

He said the upgrade would help attract junior and senior members.

Cr Rosemary Clancy asked staff if it might be possible to build apartments on the site in future, along with the sports facilities, to take advantage of increased building height limits along Brighton Rd.

Acting chief executive Trish Aukett said “all things are possible” but the concept plans had already gone out to community consultation.

She said there would be an opportunity to consider the final designs later.

The $1.19 million upgrade is currently unfunded and still needs to be approved by the council.

It comes after the council voted to spend $461,000 to replace the HY Sparks grandstand with seats on a grass mound.

The grandstand was left with significant damage after its roof blew off during a storm in December.
