Father and son duo Nick and Jayme Davey, owners of the Orange Spot Bakery at Glenelg, are no strangers to success, winning a long list of awards in the 18 years they have been running the business.
The Orange Spot was crowned the winner in our Delicious Local poll to find the best bakery in the western suburbs, with the bakery attracting almost 20 per cent of the vote from a strong field of competitors.
Jayme said his parents ran bakeries all his life, so he grew up baking.
“I’m approaching 40 and it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say I’ve been baking for 30 years,” he said.
“I’ve been baking since I was tall enough to reach the bench.”
The skills of Jayme and his staff are highlighted by the awards they have won including taking out the title of Australia’s best pastie 10 years in a row.
Jayme puts their pasties’ success down to consistency.
“When you come into the shop, you’ll be getting the same pastie we entered in the competition,” he said.
Jayme said another huge honour was winning Australia’s best hot cross bun – a highly sought after award.
“It’s a really hard one to win,” he said.
Jayme said it was worth the trip to Shepparton in Victoria to enter the best hot cross bun awards and fly the flag for South Australia.
“We’re really passionate about promoting SA,” he said.
Another item that is red hot in the bakery is their donuts, with between 500 to 600 flying out the door each week.
Rounding out the top five bakeries in the western suburbs were Cafe De Vili’s at Mile End, Ned Kelly’s Bakery at Alberton, Brighton Jetty Bakery at Brighton and the Red Mill Bakehouse at Ethelton.
