The man alleged to have attempted to rob a Croydon Park restaurant was left so injured after a citizen’s arrest he had to face court from his hospital bed.
Solomon Tefera Woreta, 37, of Parafield Gardens, was on Friday afternoon dialled into the Port Adelaide Magistrates Court from his room at the Royal Adelaide Hospital facing a charge of aggravated theft using force.
Counsel for Mr Woreta, sought adjournment of charges until a later date and did not apply for bail.
Mr Woreta was arrested outside of Croydon Park’s Curry Lover restaurant about 9pm on Wednesday night after he allegedly tried to steal cash from inside.
Police will allege he entered the Days Road shop armed with a baseball bat and threatened staff, ordering them to hand over the contents of the till.
After being arrested, police say, Mr Woreta was taken to the hospital where he remains in a serious condition.
Police say the injuries were “sustained prior to his arrest” by them.
“Western District CIB are investigating the matter in consultation with Major Crime Detectives,” a police statement said.
Major Crime Detective Inspector Brett Featherby said Major Crime were involved given the possibility Mr Woreta may have received “life threatening injuries”.
Auxiliary Magistrate Alfio Grasso until February 15.
Anyone with information on the alleged robbery is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
