A man who allegedly broke into a western suburbs restaurant and threatened staff with a baseball bat was arrested after the owners and customers detained him.

The man entered the Curry Lover Indian Restaurant on Days Rd, Croydon Park, just after 9pm as it was closing.

He allegedly began hitting the restaurant counter with a bat while screaming and demanding money.

Owners Anand Singh, 42 and his wife Anita, 38 were working near the kitchen at the time.

Mr Singh heard the commotion then confronted the man.

Mr Singh first went behind the counter and gave the man money, but the man allegedly hit his hand with the bat and then attempted to attack Mrs Singh with it, before trying to leave.

But Mr Singh grabbed the man from behind and pinned him down as a customer called the police.

Police arrived within five minutes and recovered the money.

“I didn’t know the person and this is the first robbery that has happened at our restaurant,” Mr Singh said.

“I didn’t feel good while it was happening. I was really scared.”

Mrs Singh said: “My husband grabbed him from behind when he tried running away and told him to relax.

“We gave him water to try get him to relax because he was screaming so much.”

Police were at the restaurant on Thursday morning gathering evidence and later said the man had been taken to hospital for treatment of injuries “sustained prior to his arrest”.

A Parafield Gardens man, 37, was arrested and was expected to be charged with aggravated robbery.
