A talented footballer who sexually abused three children punched one in the stomach while she was pregnant to “kill what was inside of her”, a court heard.

Angus David McInnis, 22, was jailed for four years after he left one young girl traumatised and having to rebuild her life.

During sentencing, the District Court heard McInnis sexually abused the first victim, who was aged 15.

The court heard on one occasion the victim tried to roll away from McInnis and he slapped her across the face.

McInnis then began sexually abusing the second victim.

The court heard he filmed sexual activity with her on at least one occasion and became violent towards her.

The court heard the victim became pregnant.

“During a later sexual encounter with her while she was still pregnant, you punched her in the stomach, saying that was to kill what was inside of her,” Auxiliary Judge Gordon Barrett said.

“Sometime after that, she believed she experienced a miscarriage.”

He continued having sexual intercourse with her until he was arrested for unlawful sexual intercourse with a separate 14-year-old victim.

McInnis was jailed in January for that offending, with the judge describing the conduct as “predatory, forceful, and persistent”.

The court heard after McInnis was released on bail he continued to sexually abuse the second victim and on one occasion put his hands around her neck so tight she couldn’t breathe.

McInnis, of Port Augusta, pleaded guilty to five counts of unlawful sexual intercourse.

A victim impact statement was read to the District Court last month by the second victim, saying McInnis had left her with permanent scars and a lifetime of pain.

“The last two years has been a rollercoaster of emotion, you still have a mental hold on me like no other,” she said.

“I ... had to rebuild myself up from nothing.”

The court heard McInnis’ partner, who is of legal age and remains supportive of him, gave birth to their child in November 2020.

The court heard McInnis was a talented sportsperson, having played SAPSASA football and cricket and was part of the B-grade Spencer Gulf Football League premiership team in 2019.

Sally Burgess, told the court during sentencing submissions McInnis regretted his behaviour and the media coverage of the case had brought him and his family embarrassment and shame.

However, Michael Foundas, for the prosecution, said any negative blowback to McInnis from media coverage was “entirely self imposed”.

“Two days after his release (on bail) for that other offending Mr McInnis posted a picture of himself on Snapchat with a headline ‘I’m back b****es’,” he said.

Auxiliary Judge Barrett agreed and said nothing suggested McInnis had much insight into his offending.

He sentenced McInnis to four years jail, with a non-parole period of three years and three months.

The sentence was backdated to May 3.
