Port Augusta man Angus McInnis pleaded guilty to sexually abusing two further children

A talented footballer who continued to sexually abuse another child shortly after being released on bail left her with permanent scars and having to rebuild her life.

SA government under fire over scathing child sex abuse report

A predator who sexually assaulted two more children – one after being released on bail – still has little insight into his offending, a court has heard.

Angus David McInnis, 22, left one young girl traumatised and having to rebuild her life after he sexually assaulted her in a violent attack.

A victim impact statement was read to the District Court on Friday by one of the victims, saying McInnis had left her with permanent scars and a lifetime of pain.

“The last two years has been a rollercoaster of emotion, you still have a mental hold on me like no other,” she said.

“I, as a 15-year-old girl, had to rebuild myself up from nothing.”

The victim said she had to move out of her childhood home because it was where McInnis sexually assaulted her and choked until she couldn’t breathe.

“I genuinely thought I was going to die that day. Do you know what it feels like to have your life flash before your eyes and the world slowly go black?” she said.

Michael Foundas, for the prosecution, told the court both the victims were 14 when McInnis started sexually abusing them.

The court heard McInnis was arrested in March 2021 for unlawful sexual intercourse with a separate 14-year-old victim, which he was jailed for in January.

Mr Foundas said McInnis was granted bail in April 2021 and continued to sexually abuse one of the victims until the last offence on July 3, 2021.

“He’s found under (the victim’s bed) by (the victim’s) mother and there’s a sexual act that had taken place that day,” he said.

The court heard McInnis contacted the victims by social media.

Sally Burgess, for McInnis, said the dangers of young people navigating social media explained how the meetings with the victims came about.

Mr Foundas said he didn’t know how that mitigated McInnis’ conduct, commenting “respectfully, Mr McInnis is that danger”.

McInnis, of Port Augusta, pleaded guilty to multiple counts of unlawful sexual intercourse.

Ms Burgess told the court McInnis excelled in sports from a young age.

McInnis played SAPSASA football and cricket and was part of the B-grade Spencer Gulf Football League premiership team in 2019.

The court heard McInnis, who had previously worked in traffic management, had a young daughter with his current partner who still supported him.

Ms Burgess said McInnis regretted his behaviour and the media coverage of the case had brought him and his family embarrassment and shame.

Mr Foundas said any negative blowback to McInnis from media coverage was “entirely self imposed”.

“Two days after his release in April for that other offending Mr McInnis posted a picture of himself on Snapchat with a headline ‘I’m back b****es’,” he said.

“That resulted in the negative blowback … and a further example of lack of insight on his behalf.”

Mr Foundas said the court hadn’t heard any insight from McInnis about the effect of the victims of his offending.

“Not a word about it,” Auxiliary Judge Gordon Barrett replied.

McInnis will be sentenced next week.
