Allen Bonham, Kaziah Hanslow and Benjamin Lange to be sentenced for assaulting man in Port Pirie

A 57-year-old man was left terrified and with a broken nose after a trio went to his property and bashed him in a callous attack over a missing electric scooter.

A trio who left a man with a broken nose in a “spur of the moment” bashing over an electric scooter will learn their fate next month.

Allen Stewart Bonham, 54, Kaziah Jean Hanslow, 39, and Benjamin Wayne Lange, 42, formed a joint enterprise and launched the terrifying attack in March 2022.

A victim impact statement was read to the District Court on Friday by a prosecutor.

The 57-year-old said the crime changed his life and left him feeling depressed and anxious.

“I get very frightened when there’s a knock on my door. I don’t even want to open the door in my own home,” he said.

The prosecutor told the court the victim was struck multiple times to the face during the attack, in which he suffered a broken nose.

“It would have been extremely frightening for the victim who was home alone when he was attacked by multiple people,” the prosecutor said.

Lange, of Port Lincoln, and Hanslow and Bonham, of Port Pirie West, pleaded guilty to assault causing harm.

Alex Rice, for Bonham, told the court the group didn’t go to the victim’s Port Pirie West property with the intention of committing violence.

“Mr Bonham was there with the other two to see whether the victim had … his former partner’s bike,” he said.

“The victim said it’s not here, and laughed in his face.”

Mr Rice said Bonham overreacted in the argument and the “spur of the moment” attack ensued.

“It is a crime of stupidity rather than true malice,” he said.

“It was a callous act.”

Brittany Armstrong, for Hanslow, told the court her client had a limited role in the offending and wasn’t part of the assault but committed property damage.

Ms Armstong said Hanslow had taken significant steps to rehabilitate from her drug addiction and the mother-of-four was now employed in the seafood industry.

The court heard Hanslow was in a long-term relationship with Lange and was persuaded to attend the victim’s address in support of her partner.

Sally Burgess, for Lange, told the court her client acknowledged he handled the situation poorly.

“It is clear that this incident arose from his loss of emotional control,” she said.

The court heard Lange was now employed in fish processing and had moved away from negative associates in Port Pirie.

Ms Burgess said Lange had been the victim of two stabbings and asked the court not to hand him an immediate jail term for his “momentary madness”.

Judge Gordon Barrett will sentence the trio next month.
