Shineah Goody travels almost 300km to Adelaide from Edithburgh and back three times a week just to play football.
At 15, she isn’t old enough to get her licence, but is lucky to have her parents drive her back and forth, giving their footy-crazed daughter a chance to pursue her dreams.
And Goody, who is part of Woodville-West Torrens’ SANFLW team and Port Adelaide’s female Next Generation Academy, is grabbing the opportunitywith both hands.
She is one of the youngest in the Eagles team, making her league debut this year, but that has not stopped her from starring.
The youngster, who is also part of Henley Sharks’ junior girls team, put in a strong performance during Woodville-West Torrens’ round three clash with Glenelg.
She amassed 16 possessions and 11 tackles in a hard-fought three-point victory over the Tigers at Richmond on Saturday.
It led to her being named the SANFLW Player of the Week.
Goody, who can play in the midfield, forward or defence, has come along way from practising her kicking in her bedroom at home.
She credits playing in boys teams growing up for her development.
“I grew up watching other people play and I just started to kick a footy in my room and try to get it in my bin,” Goody said.
“Then mum said I should play in a league and the closest one was with the Southern Eagles on the Yorke Peninsula with the boys and it progressed from there.
“The SANFLW is pretty good but I am still getting used to the pace a little bit but I am coping with it fine.
“It was just great to get the win and that our hard work paid off.
“It is overwhelming to be recognised.”
She says the long drives to Adelaide don’t bother her and she is grateful to have her parents’ support.
“Port Adelaide’s Academy training is on Monday and the Eagles’ on Wednesdays then I have games on the weekend so I usually travel three times a week,” Goody said.
“If Dad is taking me, we drive there and drive back but if Mum is taking me we stay over (in Adelaide).
“My parents have had a pretty big impact and they’ve really allowed me to play.”
The Eagles will be hoping to snatch a consecutive win when they take on Central District at Richmond Oval this Friday night.
