Find out who SA’s next crop of women’s footy stars are ahead of the 2021 SANFLW season

The SANFLW season kicks off next week so we’ve identified 20 of the best young guns in the class of 2021. See the list of SA’s next generation of stars here.

The 2021 SANFLW season kicks off next Friday and ahead of the new campaign, we’ve identified 20 young guns to watch.

LAITIAH HUYNH

Club: Central District

Age: 18

Huyn is another Bulldogs named in the state under-18 squad and she is renowned for her speed through the midfield and ability to snap goals inside 50.

She is described by Ribbons as being “really exciting” and has the ability to play as a small half- forward as well as on-ball.

LAUREN BREGUET

Club: Central District

Age: 17

Breguet is set to line up in her second SANFLW season with the Bulldogs after moving to Adelaide from Victoria.

The rising star played in the Sunraysia Women’s Football League with Cardross before relocating across the border.

Breguet is a strong, skilful midfielder in the state squad.

Central coach Shaun Ribbons describes her as a “really hard worker, tough, in and under type of player”.



MADDY LANE

Age: 17

Club: Central District

Lane, a Barossa District product, captained the state under-16 side in 2019 and was also part of the under-18 team that same year.

The youngster is versatile and can play in the midfield, defence and up-forward.

Lane is skilful, has an accurate kick and wins plenty of the ball.

BROOKE TONON

Club: Glenelg

Age: 18

The East Gambier Football and Netball Club product is in the state under-18 program and is a very good ball user who can read the play well.

The small forward has developed well during pre-season and worked hard on her physical strength.

According to Tigers coach Jason Fairall, Tonon “is looking very confident out on the training track” and will be able to push up to the wing if the side needs her to this season.

MADISYN FREEMAN

Club: Glenelg

Age: 18

Freeman is the Tigers’ reigning best and fairest winner.

She has also featured in the state programs.

“She’s very elusive, a good ball winner and she’s also in our leadership group this year as well,” Fairall said.



TAMSYN MORRISS

Club: Glenelg

Age: 18

Morriss featured with the Central Allies at the 2019 AFL Women’s under-18 championships in Queensland before the coronavirus pandemic halted all national competitions last year.

She is a midfielder/defender who is a strong decision maker with elite skills.

Morriss prides herself on being a competitive beast who works super hard to ensure she is rarely beaten.

KATE CASE

Club: North Adelaide

Age: 18

Case is one of North’s recruits from the country.

She drives three and a half hours for every training session and game from her home in Hammond — a small town in the Flinders Ranges.

North’s reigning premiership coach Krissie Steen said the winger was important to the side as it chased a second flag.

“She played in our premiership last year and we relied on her heavily,” Steen said.

“She’s one of those players who gets overlooked but she’s really skilful.”

AMELIE BORG

Club: North Adelaide

Age: 15

Borg has just turned 15 but Steen already has big wraps on the utility, originally from Golden Grove Football Club.

The rising star is preparing for her first league season and Steen says she is more than ready.

“She can play ruck, back or on-ball,” Steen said.

“She’s tall, she’s super athletic, she can run and she can take a ripping mark.

“She has the talent like someone who’s been playing for ages and she’s just turned 15

“Amelie is going to be one who works so hard and she’ll reach a tipping point where she becomes brilliant.”

EMMA CLARK

Club: Norwood

Age: 19

Injuries have halted most of Clark’s football career but she is fit and ready to go for 2021.

Clarke took some time away from the SANFLW last season and played in the Adelaide Footy League with Tea Tree Gully but is back with the Redlegs this year.

The midfielder is a small but tough in and under type player.

New Norwood coach Matt Creeper said Clark is strong on the outside who could also play in the forward line if needed.



LANA SCHWERDT

Club: Norwood

Age: 16

As the The daughter of former Crows and Central District wingman Stephen Schwerdt, this youngster has football in her blood.

She’s an elite runner, similar to her father, after impressing in the Redlegs’ 2km time trial.

Creeper said Schwerdt was set to be a “serious player”.

“She’s a bit of a half-forward/midfielder who’s’ really hard at it and strong,” Creeper said.

“She’s only a kid but she’s not scared of the contest so she’s going to be a really good player for us going forward.”

BROOKE BOILEAU

Club: South Adelaide

Age: 16

The 16-year-old defender is set to be “a superstar” according to South Adelaide coach Andrew Brockhurst.

Boileau is a defender, originally from Mt Compass Football Club and is known for her consistency, having jointly won the 2019 under-16 club best and fairest.

She can provide plenty of run coming out of defence and played an integral role in Mt Compass’ under-16 GSFLW premiership last year.

JORJA HOOPER

Club: South Adelaide

Age: 17

Hooper is a dual sports star, having also been involved in the junior Australian softball squad.

The 17-year-old has come through the Panthers’ junior squad after being recruited from Happy Valley.

She is a full-forward with strong hands in the air and a reliable kick.

BROOKE KLEINIG

Club: South Adelaide

Age: 17

Klenig is another defender who has enjoyed a rapid rise from South’s junior ranks.

Brockhurst said he gave her plenty of responsibility to lead the Panthers’ defence during a trail game against Sturt earlier this month and Klenig did not disappoint.

She is a really aggressive player, a good tackler and quick by foot coming out of the backline.

LILY WHITCOME

Club: Sturt

Age: 15

Whitcome was involved with Adelaide Crows’ 2019 Elite Talent Squad

She’s still very young but she’s a very exciting prospect.

She’s just a natural footballer who plays halfback.

“She’s skilled, has a good understanding of the game, reads the play well and for someone so young she defends one-on-one very well, too.

TIAH HOUGH

Club: Sturt

Age: 17

The daughter of Adelaide Oval curator Damien Hough, she made her debut with the Double Blues last year.

Hough is a strong on-baller.

She is “only tiny” according to Sturt coach Bruce Dawes, but her workrate is “right up there”.

The youngster is very physical, has good skills and is a real competitor who will help the Double Blues in their quest to make the finals for the first time.

LAUREN YOUNG

Club: West Adelaide

Age: 15

Young is gearing up for her inaugural season with West Adelaide having arrived at Richmond Oval from Adelaide Footy League side Goodwood Saints.

The rising star is in the junior girls state program and, according to Bloods coach Mark Moody, Young is a “very, very good utility”.

ZOE VENNING

Club: West Adelaide

Age: 17

The winger/forward, originally from Blackwood Football Club, is athletic with a good goal sense.

She was part of the under-16 state squad in 2018/19 before the coronavirus hit.

Moody said Venning was a strong, tough inside midfielder who was strong also overhead.

BROOKLYN KRAFT

Club: Woodville-West Torrens

Age: 18

The former South Adelaide ruck will line up with the Eagles this season.

She is hard working and is able o deliver the ball well to the forwards.

Eagles coach Tess Baxter said Kraft would also be used in the forward lines because of her “strong marking and clean finish”.

“We are looking forward to break out year from Brooke who has worked extremely hard in the pre season,” Baxter said.

JAMIE PARISH

Club: Woodville-West Torrens

Age: 17

Parish is a very versatile player.

She was used as a key shutdown defender in her first year with the Eagles in 2020 but Baxter was now looking to help Parish push into the midfield this season.

“With her size, ability to win the footy and decision making by hand we expect, given the opportunity, Jamie will rate high in clearances across the competition and push to become a premier midfielder,” Baxter said.

SHINEAH GOODY

Club: Woodville-West Torrens

Age: 15

Goody play on the wing or as a small forward and her strong run and carry skills sets her apart from her opposition.

The youngster will catch the eye of spectators this year with the way she glides across the oval with the footy.

“Given any space around the goals she will slot it from any angle,” Baxter said
