An AFL premiership player has made a call on his local footy future after a successful 2024 Adelaide Footy League season.

Scott Lycett has signed a two-year extension with reigning division one premier Port District after helping the club to a premiership in his first season at the local level.

Lycett, who retired from the AFL at the end of the 2023 season after winning a premiership with West Coast and spending five years with Port Adelaide, joined Port District ahead of the 2024 season alongside South Adelaide captain Matt Rose and defender Joey Haines.

He was one of the best performers in his side’s upset 20-point win over Glenunga in the grand final and was also named in the Team of the Year.

“It was an easy decision,” Lycett said of his extension with Port District.

“I live close to the club, I have a lot of family and friend connections there, we have a great supporter base and we’ve had some success as well.

“I’m very excited to just continue playing with my mates and with a lot less pressure as well.

“Hopefully we can build on the success we had this year and do something special.”

Lycett was one of Port District’s most consistent players throughout 2024 and relished the opportunity to play alongside close friend Sam Gray.

He said his first season of local footy was one he would never forget.

“It was unbelievable.

“I made the transition really easily just being back with my mates and having so much fun.

“You’re obviously going to have some ups and downs on the field every footy season and we started slow but we managed to come home strong and achieve the ultimate success.

“We can definitely get better – we’ve got a really good mix of older guys and younger guys and we’re going to come back fit and ready to put a full season of good footy together.”

Lycett tore his right quadricep leading into the first final this year but still managed to perform at a high level throughout his team’s premiership charge.

He confirmed he was feeling good ahead of pre-season.

“Yeah I’m a bit better now,” he said.

“I’ve started running again and getting back into that habit so I’m feeling good.

“Tearing my quad right before finals was challenging but it’s also good to know I can push through pain when needed and still perform.”
