Lobethal fans and players celebrate extra time premiership

The local SA footy season is over after a thrilling month of finals and grand finals.

From remarkable premiership drought-breaking victories to multiple extra time wins, this season’s finals series had it all.

To recognise the achievements of the SA’s local footy clubs, we’ve highlighted the premiership winning side and best on ground player for every competition around the state.

SANFL

Premier: Norwood 8.11 (59) d North Adelaide 8.10 (58)

Norwood won its 31st SANFL premiership in dramatic fashion on Sunday, coming back from 17 points down with 10 minutes left to win by a point.

It was neck-and-neck in poor conditions for the full four quarters and the Redlegs never gave up despite going down by three kicks thanks to a snap goal around the corner by Magarey Medalist Aaron Young.

Norwood’s Matthew Nunn, Jay Rantall, Nik Rokahr, Harry Boyd, Ben Jarvis and Matt Panos all stood up in the final minutes as Panos kicked the winner on his left to send fans into a frenzy.

Boyd was awarded the Jack Oatey Medal for his efforts in ruck, accumulating over 60 hitouts and 20 disposals.

ADELAIDE FOOTY LEAGUE

Division one – Port District 9.9 (63) d Prince Alfred OC 7.3 (45)

It was a historic day for Port District, the club winning its first A Grade flag in 30 years with a dominant display against 2021 premier Prince Alfred Old Collegians.

The Magpies led from start to finish and league team of the year member Cooper Gaffney was the standout off half-back and through the middle.

Division two – Broadview 7.11 (53) d Sacred Heart OC 6.5 (41)

Broadview held on against top side Sacred Heart Old Collegians for a two-goal win in what was a neck-and-neck scrap.

Onballer Nick Liddle – who joined in the offseason from South Adelaide – tore the game apart with his contested ball work and efficient disposal.

Division three – Golden Grove 9.8 (62) d Edwardstown 1.5 (11)

The Kookaburras completed an undefeated season in division three with a comfortable win over fifth placed Edwardstown in the big dance.

Division best and fairest Jake Pitman was again a standout for his side, while Lewis Johnston was also a big presence at the back and up front.

Division four – Pembroke OS 19.5 (119) d Hope Valley 9.6 (60)

New playing-coach and former Sturt and Norwood gun Mark Evans came up big for his side with multiple goals and a strong display in the contest.

The Kings completed what they set out to do at the start of the year and will now compete in division three.

Division five – Hectorville 12.7 (79) d Lockleys 8.8 (56)

Hectorville completed an upset win against Lockleys to win the division five flag.

Onballer Jake Mazzone – joint winner of the division best and fairest – was dominant yet again for the Hounds as they fought off the Demons in the second half.

Division six – Trinity OS 13.15 (93) d West Croydon 7.6 (48)

Trinity Old Scholars became another undefeated side in season 2022 with an impressive defensive display against the Hawks.

The Lions were too strong in the contest, winning clearance after clearance and locking their opposition in their front half.

Cam Matters was again a standout for his side through the middle and won best on ground.

Division seven – Greenacres 14.6 (90) d Adelaide Lutheran 9.10 (64)

The Dragons also went the entire season unbeaten, overrunning Adelaide Lutheran in a one-sided final term to seal the div seven premiership.

Centre Scott Burnett was elite in the contest and did significant damage with his disposal around the ground.

ADELAIDE PLAINS FL

Premier: Two Wells 16.13 (109) d Balaklava 11.6 (72)

Best on ground: Harry Gameau

Second spot Two Wells dominated fourth spot Balaklava in this year’s Adelaide Plains big dance.

The Roosters kicked nine goals to seven to oust their opponent, with Harry Gameu fighting hard in the middle and also hitting the scoreboard.

BAROSSA LIGHT AND GAWLER FA

Premier: Nuriootpa 7.10 (52) d South Gawler 4.7 (31)

Best on ground: Brad Hoepner

Nuriootpa held South Gawler scoreless in the third term after a 34-7 opening term to run away with the Barossa Light and Gawler FA premiership.

Onballer Brad Hoepner was a force, winning his fair share of the footy and also kicking a major.

EASTERN EYRE FL

Premier: Ports 10.13 (73) d Ranges 11.4 (70)

Best on ground: Aseri Raikiwasa

Ports and Ranges played out an epic in the Eastern Eyre grand final, the Magpies holding off a courageous opponent in the final term to cling on to a three-point win.

A three-quarter-time lead of 15 points had been earned by Ports but Ranges came back in the final term, holding the Magpies to just one major while it added three.

The Magpies, led by best on ground Aseri Raikiwasa and Aisea Raikiwasa who dominated on the flanks and through the middle, held firm in the dying seconds and took out the win.

FAR NORTH FL

Premier: Olympic Dam d Hornridge

Best on ground: Brad Hoepner

Two weeks before his best on ground performance for Nuriootpa, Hoepner was named best afield in Olympic Dam’s premiership win over Hornridge.

The result marked revenge for the club after going down to Hornridge in the grand final last season.

GREAT FLINDERS FL

Premier: United Yeelanna 15.5 (95) d Elliston Districts 3.7 (25)

Best on ground: Bryce Breed

United Yeelanna booted seven goals to one in the second term and then held Elliston Districts goalless in the final term to complete a big premiership win.

Star Eagles Matt Crettenden, Micheal Crettenden and Bryce Breed combined for 10 goals as their side stormed to the win.

GREAT SOUTHERN FL

Premier: McLaren 11.13 (79) d Willunga 5.5 (35)

McLaren established itself as arguably SA country footy’s most outstanding side of 2022 with a big win over Willunga to complete an undefeated season.

Luke Mitton booted three goals for the Eagles and was named best on ground while Mail Medalist and captain Brett Ellis was again a force on the ball.

HILLS FL

Premier: Lobethal 7.9 (51) d Hahndorf 6.11 (47)

Best on ground: Aidan Riley

Country division premier: Gumeracha 6.11 (47) d Meadows 6.8 (44)

Lobethal dramatically won its first premiership in 20 years in an extra time victory over Hahndorf on Saturday.

Jack Stafford booted the winning goal from 50 out in the final three minutes of the second extra time period, sending fans into a frenzy.

The victory ended a run of four straight flags by Hahndorf and marked the second time Lobethal had won a grand final in extra time after its 1998 win also over the Magpies.

In the Country Division, Gumeracha held on for a thrilling three-point victory over a tough Meadows opponent.

The Magpies - led by Sam and Ben Hanna through the early-going - kicked into a 19-point halftime lead, but Meadows would soon launch a comeback, ruck utility Brady Dawe and inside gun Jack Dalgleish hitting their straps to get within a kick.

Gumeracha held firm at the back however, while top goalkicker Remy Detot and best on ground James Taylor led the side to an epic victory.

KANGAROO ISLAND FL

Premier: Western Districts 17.14 (116) d Wisanger 3.6 (24)

Best on ground: Lleyton Hedges

Top KIFL side Western Districts unsurprisingly completed its strong season with a premiership.

The Saints held Wisanger to one goal in the first three terms of a dominant showing in the middle of the park, the Panthers unable to handle the flag favourite’s unrelenting attack.

Lleyton Hedges booted a huge nine goals in the game to win best on ground.

KOWREE NARACOORTE TATIARA FL

Premier: Lucindale 5.16 (46) d Keith 5.8 (38)

Best on ground: Brad McCarthy

Top KNTFL side Lucindale beat second spot Keith in a nailbiting big dance, overcoming an 18-point three-quarter-time deficit to grab the win.

The Roos’ poor kicking did not matter as they held the Crows scoreless in the fourth term and added 3.8 to achieve a famous premiership.

Brad McCarthy was a machine in the contest and also kicked an important goal.

MALLEE FL

Premier: Pinnaroo 9.14 (68) d Border Downs Tintinara 4.5 (29)

Best on ground: Christian Vince

Pinnaroo held Border Downs Tintinara scoreless in the second term and booted six goals of their own to set up a big grand final win in the Mallee FL.

The Supa Roos were a force in the middle, winning countless centre clearances and giving their forwards first look at it.

Christian Vince was immense for his side in the contest while Mail Medalist Ben Moroney booted three majors.

MID SOUTH EASTERN FL

Premier: Kalangadoo 11.16 (82) d Hatherleigh 3.3 (21)

Top MSEFL side Kalangadoo consolidated its outstanding year, winning the premiership against an overwhelmed Hatherleigh.

Star Magpie Tye McManus was on song through the middle of the park while forward Michael Krieger kicked six majors.

NORTH EASTERN FL

Premier: BSR 15.4 (94) d MinMan Eagles 9.10 (64)

Best on ground: Angus Ashby

Angus Ashby was the catalyst for his BSR Tigers side’s win over MinMan Eagles in the North Eastern Football League.

The gun onballer worked tirelessly in the contest as his side booted nine goals to four in the second half to take out a remarkable premiership and remain undefeated in 2022.

NORTHERN AREAS FA

Premier: Broughton Mundoora 10.11 (71) d Orroroo 8.9 (57)

Broughton Mundoora held Orroroo scoreless in the third term and added five goals to build a 33-point lead and set up a 2022 premiership win in the NAFA.

Vice captain Kane Bowley was at his spectacular best on the ball, winning countless contests and distributing with high efficiency.

PORT LINCOLN FL

Premier: Marble Range 8.7 (55) d Tasman 6.4 (40)

Marble Range kicked 2.6 to 1.0 in the final term of the Port Lincoln FL grand final to achieve victory over Tasman and remain undefeated in 2022 with a thrilling premiership win.

Rangers star Jaxon Bennett was a standout on the ball and up front for his side, hitting the scoreboard and creating for teammates.

RIVER MURRAY FL

Premier: Imperials 11.18 (84) d Jervois 7.7 (49)

Best on ground: Luke Harrowfield

Third-placed Imps upset the top spot Bluds in this year’s RMFL grand final, booting five goals and nine behinds to just one point in a dominant third term.

It was an impressive defensive display by Imperials, the club dominating at stoppage and in the middle as star veteran Luke Harrowfield picked the game apart up front and on the ball with his exceptional ball-use.

RIVERLAND FL

Premier: Renmark 8.15 (63) d Waikerie 4.8 (32)

The Rovers controlled the RFL grand final from start to finish against Waikerie.

Ricky Garrett was at his best on the ball and also booted two majors as Renmark dominated the contest against Waikerie.

RIVERLAND INDEPENDENT FL

Premier: Blanchetown-Swan Reach 10.7 (67) d Sedan-Cambrai 8.6 (54)

Best on ground: Matt Clark

BSR trailed by 11 points at the first break of the RIFL grand final against Sedan-Cambrai but gradually managed to turn its fortunes around for a narrow win.

The Redbacks used momentum gained in the clearance department to boot eight goals to four through the remaining three terms.

Matt Clark was his side’s best performer, booting three goals up front and linking with teammates seamlessly.

SOUTHERN FL

Premier: Reynella 9.3 (57) d Morphett Vale 6.7 (43)

Despite a remarkable Morphett Vale comeback, Reynella won its first premiership since 2015 and became the first club to win after Flagstaff Hill’s run of six straight.

The Wineflies led 36-4 at half time but the Emus would fight back in the third term through brilliant work by Harry Clarkson and Michael Smith through the middle to make it 36 apiece at the final break.

Reynella superstars Cam McGree and Sam Whitbread sprung into action in the fourth quarter however, dominating on the ball as their side booted three goals to one to grab the win.

SPENCER GULF FL

Premier: Solomontown 11.13 (79) d Proprietary/Risdon 9.10 (64)

Best on ground: Riley Hayes

A 35 to nine point third term set up a solid 15-point premiership win by top side Solomontown over second spot Proprietary/Risdon.

The Cats were in scintillating form along the flanks and up front, while Riley Hayes and Corey Davey dominated the contest in the middle throughout the majority.

WESTERN BORDER FL

Premier: Millicent 17.9 (111) d South Gambier 9.17 (71)

Best on ground: Dylan Bromley

Millicent stormed home over league leaders South Gambier to take out the 2022 WBFL premiership, piling on 11 goals to four in the second half.

It was a tug of war through the first two terms but gun Saints Dylan Bromley (three goals) and Sam Willis (four goals) then took the game apart on the ball and in front of goal to give their side the win.

WESTERN EYRE FL

Premier: Blues 7.3 (45) d Western United 5.9 (39)

Best on ground: Sam Jonas

Second spot Blues beat top spot Western United in a thrilling grand final scrap, holding the Tigers goalless and coming from 10 points down at the final break to steal the win.

Key player Sam Jonas was a big presence down back and up front, booting an important goal and leading his side to the win.

WHYALLA FL

Premier: Central Whyalla 8.8 (56) d Weeroona Bay 2.12 (24)

Best on ground: Marko Tansell

Central Whyalla completed a sensational year with a convincing win over Weeroona Bay in the

WFL grand final.

Marko Tansell was a dominant presence on the ball through all four quarters and also hit the scoreboard to earn best on ground.

YORKE PENINSULA FL

Premier: Moonta 8.8 (56) d CMS 2.4 (22)

Former AFL and South Adelaide player Malcolm Karpany was at his brilliant best as Moonta overran CMS Crows in the YPFL big dance.

The Demons opened up a 26-7 quarter-time lead and never looked back, leading by 33 points at the final break and closing the game out with ease.

Moonta’s midfield was on top from start to finish in the contest, with Karpany leading the way in clearances and elite decision-making.
