An SA country footy club has made a major signing as it prepares another premiership push in 2025.
Reigning Kowree Naracoorte Tatiara Football League premier Mundulla has signed former Glenelg captain and premiership star Chris Curran.
Curran joined Prince Alfred OC and won a D1 Adelaide Footy League flag shortly after captaining Glenelg to its historic 2019 premiership before then returning to the Bays to play a key role in their 2024 triumph over Norwood.
With the supremely skilled and versatile star opting to step away from SANFL football for a second time, Mundulla, coached by former Glenelg player Luke Wiese, stepped in to land his signature alongside that of former Unley player Jacob Pedlar.
“Of course we know what Chris provides as a player but we’re really excited about the off-field stuff as well,” Wiese said.
“Being a SANFL premiership and state captain, he has a lot of leadership qualities he can bring to the guys which will last for a long time.
“We haven’t had a player with as much league footy experience as Chris and we think he’s going to have a great impact on the playing group just showing them another level.”
Winners of four of the last six KNTFL premierships, the Tigers just overcame top side Kybybolite in last season’s grand final.
Wiese said there was a positive vibe around the club this pre-season as his side looked to put another premiership push together.
“Everyone is super motivated and there’s a real buzz,” he said.
“The numbers on the track so far have been as good as I can remember and the guys who have been able to put full pre-seasons together have looked really good.
“We have a few injuries at the moment after leaving it all out there last season but there are now some good opportunities for others to step up.”
The KNTFL will boast a number of big names alongside Curran this season, with players such as Lewis Hender, Aaron Young and Cameron Craig all returning for Keith and former North Adelaide gun Alex Barns recruiting former Collingwood and Melbourne player Ben Kennedy to Kingston.
While Mundulla could go in as the favourite this season, Wiese said he and his team would not be jumping the gun.
“It’s incredible, our league is really strong right now.
“I feel like the top seven is going to be hard to pick and it was similar last season.
“Right now we’re just aiming to make finals and then we’ll see what happens from there.”
