Two close mates have realised a lifelong dream this week, both being drafted to the AFL in the second night of selections.
Rostrevor, Norwood and North Adelaide products Alastair Lord and Hugh Jackson were picked by Essendon and Port Adelaide respectively on Thursday.
The two up and comers went through the Rostrevor program together under footy director James Allan and represented SA in the under-19 championship this year.
Jackson, who has been a Power member since he was born in 2003, was beside himself when his name was called at pick 55.
“I was quite nervous considering how late it was in the draft but it was so surreal to hear my name, and the whole family went nuts – I reckon everyone had tears of joy,” Jackson said.
“To be staying home, and especially to be at Port Adelaide is huge for my family and I. My grandfather has been a Port Adelaide supporter his whole life so when it happened he burst into tears. It was just amazing for us all.”
The smooth-moving midfielder had multiple talks with Port Adelaide heading into the draft and heard from the club’s players after being selected.
He said he was looking forward to establishing himself at the club.
“I’ve had a few discussions with the club and I’ve heard from guys like Xavier Duursma and Tom Jonas – they’re all down to earth blokes,” Jackson said.
“I’m just really looking forward to being in that AFL environment and getting stuck in. It will be tough but I’m just so happy to be at the Power and now it’s time to show what I can do.”
Jackson was also thrilled to be drafted alongside Lord.
“Lordy getting picked was amazing. He’s one of my best mates, I’m so happy for him and hope he continues to take every chance he gets.”
This was a feeling Lord reciprocated.
“It’s absolutely unreal to see Hugh and also Cooper Murley from Norwood get drafted. They’re some of my closest mates, I’m just so stoked for them,” he said.
The speedy, line-breaking defender had an outstanding season at College, SANFL and state level.
He said being drafted at pick 46 to Essendon was a perfect outcome and a credit to those who have supported him.
“I think I can bring a vibrant energy on and off the field and do what’s best for the team. I’m ready to put in all the hard work it takes,” Lord said.
“Being drafted to Essendon was a totally unreal feeling and I have to thank Rostrevor and Jimmy Allan. He’s been absolutely amazing for me and has shown me what it takes to be a professional athlete.”
Allan was proud of the young draftees saying Essendon and Port Adelaide were getting two impressive young men.
“I’m super proud, and excited for the boys. Most young guys playing footy just want to play AFL so I’m absolutely chuffed for them,” Allan said.
“At Rostrevor we’re working hard to provide an environment and opportunities for our boys to become the best players and people they can, and both these guys are the full package on and off the field.
“I’d love to take some credit but they’re the ones who put in the work and it’s up to them in the end to take on feedback and implement it so they both really deserve this chance.”
