THEY met at a gym through their staffies and their wedding had a boxing theme, right down to the design of the cake.

Now Bec Moss is in her husband’s Matt’s corner as his trainer ahead of his fourth amateur boxing match – the Red Desert Dust-Up in Alice Springs on Saturday.

Bec, 40, has had 15 boxing contests, while Matt, 31, comes from Muay Thai – a combat sport in which he has fought 40 bouts and been knocked out cold three times in front of his wife.

She says training each other for the past three years at their Salisbury South gym, Full Tilt Fight and Fitness, has tested their relationship but ultimately strengthened it.

“Sometimes there’s a bit more emotion in there then when you’ve got a coach that’s not your partner,” Bec says.

“But it’s also really good because the other person knows what sort of preparation you need and what sort of headspace you’re in.

“I’m kind of numbed to that sensitivity of freaking out if he hits the ground.

“On fight day, there’s no issues with our relationship – it’s full professional and we’re calm with each other.

“But then we might have a big argument about it later.”

Matt adds: “We’ve come from two different things so we both think we’re good at what we do so if you put us both in the same room, we’re going to clash.

“But we’re learning and it all takes time – like a relationship itself.”

The Paralowie couple hit it off at a Perth gym, where they had brought their dogs – bull arab/staffy cross Maverick and bulldog/staffy cross Dana.

“I couldn’t go past the mohawk either – a classic hairstyle,” Bec says with a laugh.

Matt sported 10 stitches in his face at their 2014 wedding because he had copped two elbows during a fight eight days before the ceremony.

“It’s very fitting for one of us to have a black eye or been bashed up for our wedding,” Bec says.

“But you couldn’t see them (stitches) at all – the doctor did an awesome job.

“We had a boxing ring as our wedding cake and even our ‘save the dates’ were a picture of Matt and me in our reds and blues with our hands up – ‘Matt versus Bec, come see the event’.”

Since moving back to Adelaide, they train at their gym every day, often running the 4km from their home.

Both also mentor others of varying skill levels – fellow boxers, people looking to lose weight, newcomers and even children.

Their two-year-old son, Cub, is “getting really skilful on the pads”, according to Bec.

“I’d never put anyone in the ring unless I felt they were at a conditioned level to deal with it from a physical and mental point of view,” she says.

“I’ve had way more injuries in lacrosse and netball than in boxing.”
