Highlights: Payneham NU defeats Brighton Bombers

Three rounds in to the Adelaide Footy League season and the competition’s seven A grade divisions are beginning to take shape.

Some sides are flying along and yet to lose a game, while others are still searching for an elusive first victory.

Here are The Messenger’s reports from all the round two matches.

DIVISION ONE

Payneham Norwood Union coach Jace Bode believes his side is “building nicely” in division one after it grabbed a second win for season away to Brighton on Saturday.

Spurred on by a revitalised Nick Jolly, the Falcons were too strong for the Bombers in a fiery contest at Brighton Oval.

Veteran Jolly starred for much of the day and kicked two goals in the process as the visitors won 11.13 (79) to 7.12 (54).

Bode said a strong start helped PNU to control the game on its terms.

“We’ve just got a real focus on starting well,” Bode said.

“It’s something that Payneham notoriously hasn’t done in the past so our focus for the first three games has been on our start.”

He said his side was showing good signs early in the year and labelled them a different outfit to the one which won the top flight flag in 2019.

“The perception that the majority of people outside of Payneham have – and probably some within Payneham – is that we’ve got a stacked team,” Bode said.

“That’s all well and good, and we absolutely do have some fantastic players, but we’re also giving some pretty good opportunities to kids at the moment.

“You’ve got Alex Scali who played his third game, Cooper young played his second, Nick Hyland played his second. It’s a completely different group to the one that won a flag in 2019, which I don’t think people really understand.

“Every week we’ve gotten better, I think we’re building nicely.”

Bode said the performance of Jolly, who dropped “20-25kg” in the off-season, was the leading light against tough opposition in Brighton.

Gun recruit Anthony Wilson kicked three goals in a sign he is edging towards his best while Cooper Young also booted two majors.

Harrison Boyle fought hard in a losing side. It was the Bombers’ second loss of the season.
