Statements were made and top sides were toppled in a big round across the Adelaide Footy League’s divisions on Saturday.

Here are The Messenger’s reports from all the round two matches.

DIVISION ONE

A Jack Trengove-inspired Prince Alfred Old Collegians has sent a statement to the rest of division one by claiming a decisive victory over arch rival St Peter’s Old Collegians on Saturday.

The Old Reds’ six-goal to one third quarter was the catalyst as they took a 49-point win on the PAC main oval.

Trengove had 31 disposals and was instrumental alongside fellow ex-AFL midfielder Hayden Jolly.

SPOC trailed by 16 points at the main break but PAOC – which outran and outclassed the visitors for much of the day – put the foot down in the third term to prevail 15.11 (101) to 8.4 (52).

Old Reds playing coach Craig Pitt was pleased to win the Alan Crompton Cup back from their rival.

“Winning games against the top teams is always really important but to get a win like that early in the season is a great result,” Pitt said.

“Jack and Hayden are just great ball winners – they really set things up for us in the middle.”

Saints coach Geoff Riddle described his side’s ball movement as “atrocious” and lamented its consistent turnovers.

“We were beaten by a better team, simple as that,” Riddle said.

“We have a pretty proud group and they were really disappointed.

“It won’t be easy with the reigning premiers up next, there’s no easy games in division one though, but we’re at home and we’ll try to make a statement.”

SPOC will take on Goodwood Saints this Saturday down some key players.

Tall forward Luke Mitchell is yet to feature this season due to injury while Ben McGill and Ben Woolford missed Saturday’s match and Nick McGill suffered an injury during the game.

Saints also lost new recruit, ex-Richmond midfielder Daniel Jackson, just hours before the bounce when he was called in late for Adelaide’s SANFL side.

PAOC will face an intriguing battle against Rostrevor Old Collegians in round three but the Old Reds also went away with a couple of injuries to star forward Jake Pitt (ankle) and ruckman Cam Giles (groin).

ROC geared up for the match by grabbing a 15.19 (100) to 11.9 (75) win over Adelaide University on Saturday.

The margin was 11 points in favour of the visitors going into the last quarter at University Oval before the they blew the Blacks early in the term.

Craig Holm starred for ROC, captain James Jordan led from the front and recruit Shannon Snook booted four goals.

Coach Will O’Malley said Holm’s form was promising and he was on his way back to his best after a tough run with knee injuries.

“Craig had a good pre-season but we certainly didn’t push him too hard knowing we’ve got hopefully 18 games to get out of him,” O’Malley said.

“He was good on the weekend but I think he’s still got improvement to come, which is really pleasing because we know how damaging he is when he gets up and going.

“He’s only going to get better.”

Goodwood finally snapped its Largs Reserve hoodoo by beating Port District 8.11 (59) to 5.12 (42).

The hard-fought 17-point win was the Saints’ first at the ground since 2015.

Goodwood recruit Nicholas Homburg backed up his best on ground performance from round one with another stellar display, while Nicholas Favretto was again influential.

Port’s star recruit, Louis Sharrad, had another strong game for the Magpies.

Payneham Norwood Union notched its first points of the season by grinding out a victory against Unley Mercedes at Kingswood Oval.

The Jets hung in for most of the day but the Falcons – led by six goals from Liam Davis – were too strong in the 13.13 (91) to 8.8 (56) result.

Brighton also got on the board for season 2021, overcoming the promoted Tea Tree Gully by 35 points at Pertaringa Oval.

Jarrod Miller, Harrison Boyle and last season’s league medallist Nigel Osborn led the way for the Bombers.

The Wolves’ Brodie Latham was impressive with five goals in a losing side.

DIVISION TWO

Old Ignatians got the ball rolling on its season by taking care of Broadview in a close contest at Karen Rolton Oval.

Iggies, who went down to Henley by 10 points in the opening round, were on the right end of a tight affair this time as they won 13.10 (88) to 10.16 (76).

Broadview pegged back a 21-point half-time deficit to trail by just five points going into the final term.

But Iggies were able to wrestle momentum back in their favour thanks to the likes of Dylan McNeil, Tom Scanlon and Lawrence Comazzetto.

It will be a tough loss to swallow for the Tigers, who were well and truly in the contest but let down by poor finishing in front of goal.

A strong second-half performance helped PHOS Camden move to 2-0 with a good win away at Salisbury North.

Less than a kick separated the sides at the first two breaks before the Phantoms opened up a gap after half-time and could not be reeled back in.

The result left the Hawks still searching for their opening win of the season.

Foster, who kicked three majors in round one, slotted the opening goal of the match and was on target from then on as his side triumphed 20.13 (133) to 11.8 (74) at Glandore Oval.

DIVISION FOUR

A five-goal haul and a goal of the year contender from Tyson Currie was not enough to inspire Pultney to a win away against Hope Valley.

The Demons were too good in the 18.16 (124) to 10.7 (67) result at Hope Valley Oval.

But it was Navy Blues forward Currie who stole the show with a remarkable bicycle kick goal in the second quarter.

When a right-angled bounce evaded a Hope Valley defender, the ball sat up perfectly in the goalsquare for Currie to acrobatically flip his body and connect sweetly.

While he added another four majors for the match, Hope Valley was too strong on its home deck.

Former division one medallist Josh Hand was typically dominant for the Demons along with William Riddle and Ben Carabott (six goals).

At Price Memorial Oval, Mitcham made light work of Gepps Cross in a commanding 55-point win.

The Hawks, led by Henry Woodward and Darcy Lillecrapp, were impressive as they ran all over the Rams to take the 17.11 (113) to 8.10 (58) victory.

DIVISION FIVE

A seven-goal showing from Harrison Westhoff gave Colonel Light Gardens the edge for it to overcome West Croydon in an enthralling affair at Fawk Reserve.

The former Goodwood Saint had his kicking boots on as the Lions took the points, 17.9 (111) to 11.15 (81).

He had plenty of assistance up forward from Carter Grieve, who booted four majors, while Billy King, Blake Dodson and Sam Vivian put in solid displays.

Akol Deng, Llwellyn Milera and Matthew Wanganeen were among the leading lights for the Hawks, who will be ruing their missed opportunities.

Salisbury’s Richard Decrea was the hero with two crucial fourth-quarter goals to secure his side a nailbiting one-point win at home to Lockleys.

The Demons led by four points with about seven minutes remaining in the final term before Decrea put the Magpies in front when he kicked truly from a set shot.

He was then left alone in the forward 50 and slotted another on the run – a goal which would prove the matchwinner.

Lockleys pegged one back through Simon Ascoli in the final minute but it was too late with the siren sounding just after the centre bounce.

It gets the Magpies, who had the bye in round one, off to a winning start in 2021 while the reigning premier Demons are now 0-2.

It followed a 57-point victory away at Marion in round one.

SPOS, winners of the division seven flag in 2019, narrowly missed out on the sixth tier flag last season when it went down to Hectorville by two points in the grand final.

There were no such problems on Saturday as Benjamen Lennon (seven goals), Thomas Schlicker and Nikolas Papaioannou went to work against the Big Reds.

While the Saints have started strong, it is Elizabeth which leads the division six ladder.
