A mother has appeared in court charged with criminal neglect of her newborn baby, which died from injuries allegedly caused by the child’s father.

Rebecca Denton, 33, appeared in Christies Beach Magistrates Court charged with criminal neglect of her son.

On April 23 last year, the 21-day-old infant from Christies Down was taken to the Noarlunga Hospital by his parents.

The child was unresponsive and could not be revived. Medical staff declared him dead at the hospital shortly after arrival.

The boy’s father, Ashley McGregor, was charged with manslaughter and criminal neglect of the child.

During a bail application for Mr McGregor, the Christies Beach Magistrates Court heard the 31-year-old had told police he had been home alone with the child two days earlier and tripped over a dog while he was holding the child, causing the infant to fall into the bassinet.

“A coronial report from the medical examiner has come back that doesn’t concur with the defendant’s version of events,” the prosecutor said.

“It was found the injuries were inflicted and the child had extensive brain bleeding and fractured ribs.”

Mr McGregor is also facing 10 other charges including maintaining an unlawful sexual relationship with a child, having sexual intercourse with a person under the age of 14, producing and possessing child exploitation material.

He was refused bail after being arrested in June last year and has remained in custody since then.

On February 4, Ms Denton was arrested and charged with criminal neglect.

On Thursday her case was adjourned until July when she will appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court.
