A 31-year-old man from Christie Downs was refused bail on Monday afternoon, after being charged with manslaughter of a 21-day-old baby.
Ashley John McGregor appeared via video link in the Christies Beach Magistrates Court on Monday, after his arrest on Friday.
A police prosecutor told the court they opposed home detention bail for McGregor, saying the public would be in danger from his release.
On April 23, police were called to the Noarlunga hospital after the death of a 21-day-old baby.
The parents had found the baby unresponsive just before 6.30am and the infant was declared dead at the hospital just over an hour later.
The prosecutor told the court that McGregor had told police about an incident two days earlier.
McGregor told police he had been home alone with the child and tripped over a dog while he was holding the child, causing the infant to fall into the bassinet, the prosecutor said.
“A coronial report from the medical examiner has come back that doesn’t concur with the defendant’s version of events,” the prosecutor said.
“It was found the injuries were inflicted and the child had extensive brain bleeding and fractured ribs.”
Magistrate Susan O’Connor denied bail and McGregor will remain in custody to face court again in February, 2022.
“It is not in the interest of justice, the ongoing investigation or the interest of the prosecution for this man to be released on bail,” Ms O’Connor said.
