SHANA Dunn has been flipping patties for nearly a year and would not have it any other way.
The Noarlunga Downs resident is a co-owner and chef at Port Burger – a popular Port Noarlunga burger bar built from industrial shipping containers and transformed into a modern eatery.
The Saltfleet St business opened its doors in October 2018.
It specialises in a range of burgers including Texan brisket, fried chicken, crispy pork belly and vegetarian.
Ms Dunn – who runs the show alongside Ryan Thorpe, Kailin Wood and Dylan Wood – says the sense of community in the Onkaparinga area is what keeps their business ticking.
“Port Noarlunga and the Onkaparinga area offers a great sense of belonging and proud history and we are thankful to be a part of it,” the 42-year-old says.
“We also love to support local, which helps other businesses who are pushing the boundaries for great South Australian products.”
Port Burger is one of the first businesses nominated in The Messenger’s inaugural 2019 Onkaparinga Business Awards.
The awards, supported by Onkaparinga Council, aim to shine a spotlight on the businesses that make the southern region a great place to live, work and play.
Onkaparinga Mayor Erin Thompson says the awards are a tremendous opportunity to recognise and celebrate the success of the amazing businesses within the city.
“I encourage anyone who has had a great experience with a business in our city, or who wants to shine light on a quiet achiever, to nominate those businesses in the Onkaparinga Business Awards,” Ms Thompson says.
“I look forward to these awards becoming a marker of recognition for our city, to uncovering the hidden gems in our vibrant economy and building our community and business pride.”
There are awards across 14 categories, including best eatery, best tourism experience, best start-up business and best customer experience.
There is also the opportunity for a longstanding business to be the inaugural inductee into the Hall of Fame.
Nominations are now open and close on Wednesday, October 2.
Public voting will then open on Wednesday, October 9, with the winners announced at a celebration event on Thursday, November 28.
