From your daily coffee or nice meal out to unique shopping experiences and activities, they are the businesses that make our city a better place to shop, dine and play.

Now after more than 460 nominations and 22,000 public votes, some of Adelaide’s best businesses have been recognised at The City Awards 2019.

The awards — hosted by The City, Adelaide City Council and new partner Business SA — recognise outstanding businesses in 14 categories from Best Coffee Spot to Best Business that makes Adelaide more liveable.

The winners were announced by Adelaide Lord Mayoress Sandy Verschoor at a ceremony on Monday night (July 22) at Keith Murdoch House — home to The Messenger and The Advertiser.

“The City Awards are a great way to recognise the significant contributions businesses make to maintaining Adelaide’s reputation as one of the world’s most liveable cities, and I congratulate all the nominees,” Ms Verschoor says.

“They work hard every day to carve out a unique city experience that is attracting more residents, visitors and international tourists to the city and North Adelaide.”

New kid on the block, Coconut Estate Eatery has been crowned Best Dining Experience winner after being open for just eight months.

The O’Connell St cafe’s owner and head chef Sithara Rajakaruna says the awards provide small local businesses with amazing opportunities for more exposure.

“It’s great because we’re young and a small business — so this gives us the chance to get our name out there and get more support from the community,” Mrs Rajakaruna says.

This year’s awards also recognised two new categories with Hello Sarnie winning Best Caterer and The Duke of Brunswick Hotel winning Best Music, Entertainment Venue.

First time nominee Sazon took out Best Coffee Spot with their house blend — Forza — and cold drip coffees proving popular with locals.

Owner Jose Estrella says the awards and recognition encourage local businesses to continue working hard to provide for their customers.

“It’s a really really good feeling because we put a lot of work into what we do and hospitality has always been our passion,” Mr Estrella says.

“For us, this is our life and this is not just a job, it’s a way of life.”
