Edwardstown: Marion Council’s revitalisation vision revealed

A vision to transform Edwardstown and bring more commercial and retail interests, as well as housing opportunities into the suburb is being dreamed up by Marion Council.

Edwardstown will be transformed into a vibrant employment precinct as Marion Council seeks bring a bold vision to fruition.

The revitalisation of the Edwardstown employment precinct will see new commercial, retail and housing opportunities bought to the suburb.

With more than 4500 people employed in the suburb, Edwardstown accounts for 20 per cent of jobs in the Marion Council area.

Leef Independent Living Solutions on Lindsay Ave is just one of the 1775 businesses in the suburb.

Sales manager Russell Miller said the assistive products supplier would welcome the revitalisation.

“It will bring more people to the area and promote great businesses in the area, showing we are more than just Castle Plaza and the old Hills factory,” Mr Miller said.

“There are many businesses hidden away like us that provide fantastic services to the wider community.

“Not only will it give our business a boost by potentially bringing people to the area from a wider geographical aspect but it will also allow us to help more people as more people find where we are.”

The vision for the revitalisation that Edwardstown will become a hub of business and innovation to complement the nearby Tonsley Innovation District while attracting new industry and investment to the region.

As part of the project, Marion Council will also plant more than 100 trees in an effort to increase the tree canopy and reduce the heat island effect.

It will also engage local businesses and work on improving access to the hundreds of businesses in the suburb.

Marion Mayor Kris Hanna said the council was still at the dreaming stage of the massive urban renewal project.

“It’s about improving access around the area, improving the look of the place and activating the area with new commercial, retail and housing opportunities,” Mr Hanna said.

“This will include getting the right solution for South Road near Edwardstown.

“Environmental improvements include extensive stormwater infrastructure, tree plantings, a wetland, and new parks.

“Edwardstown can be revitalised to complement the nearby Tonsley Innovation District, based on 21st century industries which we still need.”
