Bunnings Noarlunga shoppers ‘let down’ by lack of size, call for bigger nursery

A “bigger and better” Bunnings has been called out by the Noarlunga community, with claims it’s not actually as big as promised.

Shoppers at the new ‘bigger and better” Bunnings Noarlunga have expressed their disappointment with the store’s size – particularly in the smaller garden centre.

Many people in the Noarlunga community are divided over a lack of nursery space at the new centre, taking to a community Facebook group.

“Am I the only one let down by the new Bunnings?” Phillip Casey wrote.

“I’m sure there is a business case for it, but some sections are much smaller, e.g. the garden and plant section.

“I went there last night with my partner and was surprised. Bunnings has put a lot of nurseries out of business and now have reduced the size of their offerings.”

Other users praised Mitre 10 McLaren Vale for its nursery section, with one saying it “amazing” what it could fit.

Other users wrote that it “all seems smaller” and was “very underwhelming”, while Dianna Maddeford said there were fewer Aussie-made products.

But some Facebook users said people could just buy their plants somewhere different and called for people to support independent nurseries.

“It was a pre-built building, not for them,” said Jude Griggs. “They have done a great job revamping it. If you don’t like it, go elsewhere.”

And Tom Polglase said Bunnings had moved into an existing building and sacrifices had to be made.

Bunnings regional manager Tom Miller acknowledged the nursery was smaller, but only because the previous Noarlunga nursery was larger than usual for a Bunnings store of its size.

“Some customers may notice the nursery is more compact than the previous store, however our range of greenlife and landscape products hasn’t changed,” he said.

“The new nursery layout has been designed to ensure we have more than enough products to meet the community’s needs, including many that are sourced from local suppliers and growers.”

Earlier in the month, the hardware giants revealed its plans for a new grand opening, featuring 1400 sqm more retail space than the suburb’s old store alongside 60 extra carparks after a $37m investment from the company.

“Our team have been working tirelessly over the past few months getting everything ready to open the doors to our brand-new warehouse,” Bunnings Noarlunga Complex Manager Sonny Papst said earlier this month.

Forty one new team members joined the existing employees on the new 12,500 sqm site that now features a five-lane drive-through trade and timber yard, dedicated special orders desk, kitchen design centre, kids playground, cafe, and more.

Mr Miller insists he’s received “lots of really positive feedback” in the first month of trading.

“We’re excited to be welcoming customers into our new Noarlunga store,” he said.

“Providing the local community with a bigger and better offer was always our goal, and we’re pleased out new store has the additional retail space to deliver that.”
