A man who viciously attacked a deli owner with a metal pole during a robbery said he never intended to hurt anyone.

Zane Leslie Parenzan, 22, was jailed in the Adelaide District Court last week for the violent robbery that left the victim fearing for her life.

The victim was the 61-year-old owner of a Port Lincoln deli.

The court heard the owner received a call from her security company on April 10, 2020 that the alarms had been activated.

The victim went to the store and found Parenzan inside.

“She saw that you were wearing a bandana over your face and were carrying a metal pole in your hand,” Judge Timothy Heffernan said during sentencing.

“You immediately hit her to the head very forcefully causing her to stumble backwards.”

The court heard Parenzan left the victim injured and bleeding as he searched the shop for money.

“When you re-entered the kitchen you found that (the victim) had very bravely risen to her feet and armed herself with a fire extinguisher,” Judge Heffernan said.

“You then hit her with the metal pole two more times, and pulled at her and either kicked or stomped on her more than once when she was on the ground.

“She was in fear for her life and she believed that you were going to kill her.”

Parenzan stole the victim’s handbag which contained $3500, as well as a Microsoft Surface Pro tablet and a keyboard.

“She bled profusely at the time of your attack, and was taken to hospital,” Judge Heffernan said.

The victim suffered multiple lacerations, which required stitches and ongoing neck pain, memory loss and dizziness.

“All of those injuries were as a result of your wilful and violent conduct towards her,” Judge Heffernan said.

The Port Lincoln man, had previously pleaded guilty to serious criminal trespass and robbery.

The court heard Parenzan said he did not intend to hurt anyone during the robbery.

“Nonetheless, you entered the premises whilst armed with a metal pole of some description, and you demonstrated that you were clearly prepared to use violence with that weapon if you took the view that it became necessary to do so,” Judge Heffernan said.

The court heard Parenzan, who is a methamphetamine addict, was remorseful for his actions and wants to stop using drugs.

“Your offending was very serious, it involved a sustained and significant level of violence and has had a lasting impact on your victim,” Judge Heffernan said.

“People like (the victim) who are simply going about their lawful business, are entitled to do so safe from random acts of violence such as yours.”

Judge Heffernan sentenced Parenzan to five years and 11 months in jail, with a non-parole period of three years and 10 months.

The sentence was backdated to April 11, last year.
