From a married Port Lincoln man who groomed a child online and sent her pornography to drug dealing mums, these are the region’s criminals punished in 2021.

Australia's Court System

From perverts with hidden cameras to violent armed robbers, plenty of Port Lincoln residents found themselves in trouble with the law last year.

While SAPOL’s data revealed Port Lincoln’s overall criminal activity mostly decreased in 2021 compared to the previous year, the region’s statistics show that threatening behaviour is up 155 per cent.

SAPOL encourages anyone at risk to contact police through 131 444, triple-0 in an emergency and support agencies.

Here is a list of Port Lincoln offenders who have recently appeared before the courts, and the consequences they’ve faced.

Kieran Bourke

A man who sent sexualised messages to a 13-year-old schoolgirl claims it was just an “online sexual fantasy”.

Kieran John Bourke, 41, was jailed in the Adelaide District Court, for grooming the child online for his own sexual gratification.

The court heard Bourke initiated a conversation on the Kik platform with someone he believed to be a 13-year-old girl on April 12, 2020 at Port Lincoln.

“You did not know you were really communicating with an undercover police officer,” Judge Karen Thomas said during sentencing.

“Over the following two weeks, you gradually increased the sexual nature of your messages and asked the complainant for photographs of herself.”

The court heard Bourke offered the victim pornographic videos and sent her sexualised GIFs, saying he wanted to do those sexual things to her.

“You sent further sexualised messages to your ‘sexy young schoolgirl’, as you called her,” Judge Thomas said.

Bourke was sentenced to one year and eight months jail, with a non-parole period of 13 months.

Samuel David Barlow, 35, avoided jail in the Adelaide District Court, due to the fact he was able to rehabilitate himself from his fantasy life.

The court heard police attended Barlow’s Port Lincoln home on November 6, 2018 and analysed his phone.

“Police reviewed approximately 1000 of the images stored and of those images 837 were child exploitation material,” Judge Simon Stretton said during sentencing.

“Following a further scan of the remaining images police confirmed that the majority were also child exploitation material.”

The court heard 196 of the images were classified as category four and 16 were in category five.

Category five on the Oliver scale – which forms the basis on which child exploitation images and videos are graded – is where a child is subjected to sadism, torture, bestiality or humiliation.

Barlow, of Venus Bay, had previously pleaded guilty to possessing child exploitation material.

Judge Stretton sentenced Barlow to 18 months jail, with a non-parole period of 10 months.

He ordered the sentence be served on home detention, with Barlow to complete 300 hours of community service within 18 months.

Nicholas Watts

A man who bashed and choked his heavily pregnant partner until her legs gave way wants to start afresh after being released from jail.

Nicholas Ra Watts, 42, has shown no remorse for the violent assaults he inflicted on his partner on multiple occasions.

The Adelaide District Court heard Watts and his partner had been living together for about seven months at the time of the offending.

The court heard Watts and the victim got into an argument in October, 2020.

“She woke to find you on top of her, having pulled the top of the bed quilt over her and placed your hands around her throat and after you released her, you punched her once to the left side of her rib cage,” Judge Paul Slattery said.

Watts assaulted the victim again in November, 2020.

“You began verbally abusing her and then grabbed her by the throat and dragged her from the bed.

“You pinned her up against the wall by her throat with the consequence that she was unable to breath and her legs gave way.”

Watts had previously pleaded guilty to assault, choking and damaging property.

The sentence was backdated to May 7.

Police found a large resealable bag containing 138g of a crystal substance, of which 64g was methamphetamine.

The court heard Akkari planned to drive to Port Lincoln, check into a hotel and leave the car unlocked where the drugs would be removed.

The court heard the drugs found were valued at $40,000.

Akkari had previously pleaded guilty to drug trafficking.

Judge Heffernan sentenced Akkari to three years and four months jail, with a non parole period of 22 months.

“You went there looking for a person who you thought had ‘ripped’ you off. He was not there,” Chief Judge Michael Evans said during sentencing.

Another man was present.

“You produced a large knife or machete, you asked him where his friend was. He said that he did not know,” Chief Judge Evans said.

“You forced him on to the bed and demanded that he empty his pockets.”

Calgaret made the man reset his iPhone and stole it, alongside $2000 cash and some personal documents.

Calgaret also stole tools and a toolbox, valued at $2000 from an unlocked garage on March 3, 2020.

The Port Lincoln born man had previously pleaded guilty to multiple offences including assault and theft.

The victim went to the store and found Parenzan inside carrying a metal pole.

“You immediately hit her to the head very forcefully causing her to stumble backwards,” Judge Timothy Heffernan said during sentencing.

The court heard Parenzan left the victim injured and bleeding as he searched the shop for money.

“You then hit her with the metal pole two more times, and pulled at her and either kicked or stomped on her more than once when she was on the ground,” Judge Heffernan said.

Parenzan stole the victim’s handbag which contained $3500, as well as a Microsoft Surface Pro tablet and a keyboard.

The Port Lincoln man had previously pleaded guilty to serious criminal trespass and robbery.

Police received information that Larking was transporting methamphetamine from Adelaide to Port Lincoln.

She was intercepted on the Port Lincoln Highway on September 1, 2020.
