Duran Calgaret dodged jail after using a machete in an Oaklands Park robbery

A machete-wielding dad whose life of crime was fuelled by “drugs and reputation” forced the mate of the man he was looking for onto a bed and robbed him.

A thief who threatened a man with a machete in a mission to hunt down someone who “ripped him off” has avoided jail.

Duran Emelio Calgaret, 20, is trying to turn around his life of crime fuelled by “drugs and reputation” after recently becoming a new father.

The Adelaide District Court heard Calgaret attended an Oaklands Park address on March 14, 2020.

“You went there looking for a person who you thought had ‘ripped’ you off. He was not there,” Chief Judge Michael Evans said during sentencing.

Another man was present.

“You produced a large knife or machete, you asked him where his friend was. He said that he did not know,” Chief Judge Evans said.

“You forced him on to the bed and demanded that he empty his pockets.”

Calgaret made the man reset his iPhone and stole it, alongside $2000 cash and some personal documents.

“You told the victim that if he went to the police you would come to his house,” Chief Judge Evans said.

Calgaret also stole tools and a toolbox, valued at $2000 from an unlocked Oaklands Park garage on March 3, 2020.

“He (the victim) now feels insecure in his home,” Chief Judge Evans said.

“The tools you stole from him were ones which he had purchased as an apprentice to learn his trade and which he continued to use.”

Calgaret, of Morphett Vale, had previously pleaded guilty to multiple offences including assault and theft.

He had spent over 12 months in custody for the offending.

The court heard the Port Lincoln born man who was raised in Whyalla started drinking and taking drugs from a young age.

“You say your offending all related to drugs and reputation,” Chief Judge Evans said.

“Your life changed when your partner had your daughter shortly after this offending.”

The court heard Dulgaret had apologised to his victims and was remorseful.

“People are entitled to be safe and feel safe at home. They need to be protected from young men who arm themselves with a weapon,” Chief Judge Evans said.

Chief Judge Evans sentenced Calgaret to two years jail, with a non-parole period of 14 months.

The sentence was suspended on a two year good behaviour bond, with supervision for 18 months.
