A country pedophile who indecently filmed young children at Kmart was also trawling the internet for depraved material, a court has heard.

Reece George, 39, turned to perverted measures to satisfy his twisted desires, which he described as a form of escapism.

During further sentencing submissions on Thursday, Tania Stevens for the prosecution, said it was evident George was trawling the internet and illicit websites in search of child exploitation material.

“On his own version this had been going on for years beyond the original search,” she said.

The District Court heard some of George’s search terms included “young girl, old man videos”, “granddaughter is horny” and “barely legal teen”.

The court heard police found over 2500 child exploitation images, with some in category five.

Category five on the Oliver scale – which forms the basis on which child exploitation images and videos are graded – is where a child is subjected to sadism, torture, bestiality or humiliation.

The court previously heard George acted upon his sexual urges by regularly indecently filming young children – some as young as three.

“Mr George was travelling around the Port Lincoln community with various cameras honing in on women and children in tight fitting clothing or in some circumstances where it’s obviously more indecent, upskirting,” Ms Stevens said.

Ms Stevens said it was evident George met the criteria for a pedophilic disorder.

“He has in the (psychological) report described experiencing sexual arousal towards pre-pubescent females,” she said.

George, of Port Lincoln, pleaded guilty to multiple counts of possessing child exploitation material and indecent filming.

Sally Burgess, for George, said they acknowledged it was very serious offending and involved real victims.

“Whilst on one hand he wanted to engage in a ‘normal’ relationship, (he) also found himself attracted to young children,” she said.

“He describes in his words his offending as a form of escapism – escaping his past, escaping his problems, escaping his thought processes of these thoughts towards children.”

The court heard George’s traumatic childhood, drug use and lack of continual employment contributed to his offending.

Judge Emily Telfer said she was concerned some of the child exploitation material had been improperly categorised and adjourned George’s charges until next month for further investigation.
