Waterloo Corner fire causes $1m damage to vehicle collection

At least part of a popular businessman’s car and motorbike collection has been destroyed in a huge fire in the state’s north. The cause of the fire remains a mystery.

Several vehicles destroyed in a fiery inferno in the northern suburbs on Tuesday evening have contributed to the staggering estimate damage bill now faced by a popular business owner.

The fire, at 137 McEvoy Road at Waterloo Corner, decimated a shed on the property which is the registered address of SA Party Hire owned by Robert Segulin.

Mr Segulin and his wife are known to the state’s Australian muscle car community and each have iconic Holdens.

It is unclear if those cars were destroyed in the inferno.

The blaze was so significant 10 fire trucks – seven from the CFS and three from the MFS – attended to put it out.

But in tragic circumstances, Mr Segulin and his wife Bronwyn’s car and motorbike collection could not be saved with the fire leaving behind an estimated $1m damage bill.

Crews from the Salisbury, Virginia and Two Wells CFS and MFS continued to fight the blaze for hours as smoke wafted across the northern suburbs.

It was hours before the blaze was extinguished, but due to the “potentially harmful nature of the burning chemicals inside the business”, an alert was issued to surrounding homes.

“Fortunately, the premises were unoccupied and fire cause investigators have been activated to attend,” a CFS spokeswoman said.

The spokeswoman said the cause of the blaze was unknown, but it was not suspicious.

It kicked off in the twilight hours of the state’s hottest day of the year as temperatures soared into the 40s and bushfire warnings were issued.

The fire was one of several over a hot stretch in SA, with three reported across Munno Para, Peterborough and Urrbrae.
