Fire crews have prevented a blaze in the Urrbrae Agricultural High School cafeteria building from spreading throughout the school.

A Metropolitan Fire Service crew responding to an alarm at Urrbrae Agricultural High School on Fullarton Rd about 9.30pm on Tuesday night found smoke issuing from the cafeteria building.

A burnt-out motor in the airconditioning unit on the roof of the cafeteria building had caught alight, but the firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze and prevent it spreading throughout the school.

There have also been two major house fires since Monday night.

A home caught fire on Collins St, Peterborough, in the state’s Mid North.

Fire cause investigators attended the scene and declared the fire as suspicious with a damage bill estimated at $150,000.

The Monday night fire came just days after the almost 125-year-old Federal Hotel in the township went up in flames on Friday.

The hotel was valued at $1.6m but there is currently no estimate of the damage bill.

Residents were evacuated and treated for smoke inhalation at the scene and a family dog was also rescued from the burning building.

The blaze spread to a neighbouring property causing minor damage, and road closures were in place on Tatura Rd.

Fire Cause investigators attended the scene and the damage bill has been estimated at $200,000.

Meanwhile, a cool change after Tuesday’s scorcher enabled CFS crews to gain the upper hand over a bushfire burning at Mount Wedge on the western side of Eyre Peninsula.
