Tristan Craig Morant faces court charged with Elizabeth car crash that killed 47-year-old Blair Athol woman

The family of a woman killed in an Elizabeth car crash have sat solemnly as the man accused of her death by dangerous driving made his first court appearance.

Distraught family members of a woman killed in a car crash at Elizabeth in January sat in court as the man accused of her death by dangerous driving appeared.

Tristan Craig Mourant on Wednesday made his first appearance at the Elizabeth Magistrates Court charged with causing death by dangerous driving, causing injury by dangerous driving and driving without due care – all aggravated offences.

Court security was on high alert as family of the 47-year-old Blair Athol woman killed in the crash sat solemnly.

Mr Mourant did not enter a plea and was unrepresented.

Magistrate Mark Semmens told the accused the charges he was facing were serious and encouraged him to “get some legal advice immediately”.

An aggravated charge of death by dangerous driving can carry a term of life imprisonment while an aggravated charge of causing harm in the same manner can carry a seven-year sentence.

Police previously reported the crash occurred on January 21 at the intersection of Main North Rd and Fletcher Rd at Elizabeth when a Toyota van and BMW collided just after 7pm.

They alleged the collision caused the van to crash into a nearby tree on the median strip before bursting into flames.

A 56-year-old Blair Athol man who was in the van was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital with serious injuries.

Mr Semmens kept in place bail conditions barring him from leaving the state and living at his Munno Para address.

“What is there to say,” a family member said outside of court.

Mr Mourant, 52, will face the Adelaide Magistrates Court in May.
