Magistrate lashes accused criminal’s revealing gym wear

A Seaton woman could be facing jail time for alleged drug driving charges, but it was her “inappropriate” court clothing that drew ire of the magistrate.

A Seaton woman’s court clothing choice has drawn the ire of a magistrate who lashed her revealing outfit, calling it “entirely inappropriate”.

Ashleigh Nicole Crease, 31, was facing the Port Adelaide Magistrates Court on several charges including being involved in a crash while under the influence of meth and with a child under 16 in the vehicle.

But it was Crease’s midriff baring crop top, gym tights and thongs that caught the eye of Magistrate Jayanthi Pandya during what would have otherwise been a routine appearance.

Ms Pandya asked Crease to stand up before delivering a lashing over her selected outfit.

“Ms Crease you might not know what’s appropriate to wear to court, but what you’re wearing is entirely inappropriate,” Ms Pandya said.

“Remember, this is a court hearing where you are facing criminal charges.

“On the next occasion, give some thought as to what you wear, particularly try to show more modesty.“

Ms Pandya’s warning coincided with International Women’s Day.

Go To Court national legal advice group recommends defendants in South Australian court follow a particular clothing etiquette.

The group says inappropriate dress includes sleeveless and strapless tops and thongs.

“If you are dressed inappropriately, the judicial officer may admonish you or ask you to leave,” the group’s web page says.

The allegations Crease drove with meth in her system and was involved in a crash with a child under 16 in her vehicle came from an incident at Port Adelaide on August 28 last year.

A second meth driving charge was alleged to have come three months later on November 22 at West Lakes.

Ms Pandya confirmed Crease was not subject to a bail agreement and allowed her to leave the courtroom after the dressing down.

Crease’s matters were adjourned for her to reappear in April.
