Is this our worst intersection in Adelaide’s north? One councillor thinks so

A SUBURBAN Adelaide council is vowing to lobby the state’s transport department for a fix at a horror intersection the mayor says “hasn’t ever worked properly”. Tell us what you think.

A SUBURBAN council will appeal to the state’s transport department to review lights at a local intersection, concerned the current arrangement is too dangerous.

Salisbury Council is appealing to have the traffic light system at one of the region’s most dangerous intersections reviewed.

At last week’s council meeting, Deputy Mayor David Balaza said the light to turn left from Waterloo Corner Rd on to Salisbury Hwy was too hard for drivers to see.

“I’ve witnessed people drive through the red light when turning left, blissfully unaware,” Mr Balaza said.

“The solution could be that the light pole is moved so the lights are bent over so drivers are forced to see it, or they add a flashing “turn left with care” arrow.”

Councillor Riccardo Zahra called for the motion to be amended to include a review of traffic lights on the opposite side, when turning left from Park Tce on to Salisbury Hwy.

He said those lights also had visibility issues.

Mr Balaza said the Department of Transport and Infrastructure needed to “go back to the drawing board” to improve the safety of the intersection.

“It causes a lot of confusion, and people aren’t aware of what they’re supposed to do when they’re stopped at that line (on Waterloo Corner Rd),” he said.

There are about 20 stand-alone traffic lights at the intersection between Salisbury Hwy, Park Tce and Waterloo Corner Rd.

Upgrades had been made to the intersection last year, and after a train and bus collision at the Salisbury Interchange level crossing in 2002 which resulted in four deaths.

However, a DPTI spokesman said on average, the department receives less than five complaints to the Traffic Management Centre each year about the intersection.

Mayor Gillian Aldridge said addressing road safety issues was a top priority.

“It’s a corner that hasn’t ever worked properly, so we will be continuing to lobby to the DPTI to make sure it is fixed to run smoothly,” Ms Aldridge said.

The council voted in favour of liaising with DPTI to seek a solution.
