Residents in Adelaide’s north can prepare to chill out as plans reveal new details for a dedicated sports hub headlined by an ice arena.

Planning documents revealed the 11,200sq m Playford Sports Hub developed by the Pelligra Group is expected to include an indoor ice skating arena of more than 2000sq m, that could be used to host league games.

Alonside the ice will also be a rock-climbing facility, two indoor basketball courts and a two-level gymnasium.

Plans also include a children’s play cafe, a shop tenancy and a restaurant with exterior dining space.

There is also expected to be 236 car parks – 177 in the basement carpark – change rooms, a rock-climbing store, kiosk and pro shop are also planned. About 15 trees would be removed, three considered significant.

Ice hockey league games could be played at the centre, the documents reveal.

The new build will be located on an empty, 24,300 sqm lot on the corner of Main North Rd and Philip Hwy, across from the Wilson Carpark, and was originally announced last year.

Adelaide has only one ice arena currently, in Thebarton, which briefly closed late last year as it changed management.

Playford Mayor Glenn Docherty said it was positive to see Pelligra move the project forward supporting the “council’s vision to reshape the Elizabeth CBD into a vibrant and cosmopolitan centre”.

“Based on the design plans, the community can expect something truly exciting and in line with what they have been telling us for some time – that they want more offerings and activities in the one place, close to home,” Mr Docherty said.

“With seven people moving to Playford each day and expected to continue to do so for the next 20 years, this facility will provide a place for our residents – and visitors beyond Playford’s borders – to socialise and connect..”

The Pelligra Group is at the helm of developing a new premium hotel in Salisbury, the first of its kind in the northern suburbs.

The development group has been heavily investing in SA and the northern suburbs following the acquisition of the former Holden site in Elizabeth in 2017, which is set be the location of the largest gym in the southern hemisphere.

Mr Docherty said alongside future private developments in the “heart of Elizabeth”, the council was also looking to “uplift” its public spaces.

“In this case it means enhancing connectivity and accessibility to and from the CBD, creating outdoor community gathering spots and uplifting existing natural spaces like Fremont Park and the Main North Road corridors to create a connected CBD precinct,” Mr Docherty said.

Submissions for the development are open until January 29.
