The home of the original AB meal and beloved late night food spot North Adelaide Burger Bar will close its doors for good on Sunday.
In a Facebook post, the burger bar announced their decision to shut up shop stating “the current financial climate, rising costs of running the business and increased utility expenses” have made it impossible for them to continue trading.
The post said the tough decision had been made despite their “best efforts” to keep the burger bar’s storied legacy alive.
When contacted by The Advertiser on Sunday, the shop was run off their feet with customers coming in for one last taste of a North Adelaide Burger Bar feed.
Owner, Bill, said that “ridiculous” rising costs in rent, electricity and gas were to blame for the cease of business.
The business has been an iconic part of South Australia’s fast food history for 73 years and has been run by multiple families, with the current owners taking over the reins in 2005.
Management expressed their “deepest gratitude” to all of the customers who have been part of the “North Adelaide Burger Bar family”.
They also thanked their staff for being “the backbone” of the business.
With more than 200 comments on the post from devastated North Adelaide Burger Bar fans it is safe to say that the establishment will be missed.
The bar is well known for its friendly feud with fellow O’Connell Street eatery, the Blue and White Cafe which also claims to have created the original AB.
Customers have been invited to come in for one last meal to say goodbye to the legendary North Adelaide business.
The closure comes amid a string of other cult establishments ceasing business for similar reasons including Parkside burger joint Gang Gang and Norwood Italian Restaurant, Martini on the Parade.
