The team behind a popular Adelaide burger and brunch cafe has admitted it’s “feeling the pinch” as it closes its Unley Road eatery due to a large spike in rent.
Gang Gang, which started as a pop-up food truck before opening its Parkside location in late 2019, will shut its doors on June 16, it announced in a social media post.
Owner-operators Morgen and Nina Wynn-Hadinata said while it was a “hard decision” it was the right time to move on, and they would continue serving up burgers at their second bricks-and-mortar restaurant, 99 Gang Gang Social, on Hindley Street in the city.
“After 5 years at our beautiful Parkside location we have decided not to extend our lease due to a large hike in rent,” the duo wrote in a Facebook post.
“We opened 2 months before the pandemic and are proud of what we accomplished during that time but is time for us to move on.
“We have loved every minute of our journey and the community we have built but like many we are feeling the pinch.
“We need to make the right steps for us personally and for our business at this time in the hospitality industry and that means making these hard decisions, whilst we can and moving forward with our new projects.”
The pair said there were “exciting new projects” in the works for Gang Gang, some of which will be announced next week.
In the meantime, starting on Wednesday, the Unley Road cafe will be serving a “curated greatest hits menu” for customers eager for their Gang Gang fix.
“Thank you again all for your support. Please do pop by for a coffee or a bite to eat whilst the doors are still painted yellow!” the post said.
Meanwhile, another Adelaide food venue which started out as a food truck is closing their bricks-and-mortar store.
The owners of Taco Cartel have revealed they’re closing their Greenwith location, admitting the shop was “never a viable stand-alone business”.
“Over the years we have always believed in giving something a go knowing it doesn’t work out all of the time and luckily for us our food truck and events business continues to smash it,” they wrote in a Facebook post.
“Our priority has always been our food truck and our popups at Adelaide’s biggest and best events and after giving the store a crack, we want to focus our energy on this.”
The rest of this month, Taco Cartel will be serving up their delicious treats at Unit Three Collective brewery at Lonsdale between Friday-Sunday.
