Two 19-year-old women have fronted court after getting into a violent brawl following a verbal slanging match at a popular Mount Gambier pub.

Two Mount Gambier teens have faced court after they got “blackout” drunk before bashing a woman who defended her friend after he was accused of being a paedophile, a court has heard.

Zaya Bawden and Maisie Vander Myle, both 19, got into a verbal slanging match with another group at the Globe Hotel — before taking the fight outside.

A police prosecutor told the Mount Gambier Magistrate Court during the November 19 incident the victim had a drink thrown at her, before leaving the hotel.

The victim was then confronted outside the hotel by the two women and was asked “where’s your friend, where’s he live?”.

The court heard Bawden became enraged after the woman blew a raspberry at her and said “don’t worry about it babe”.

“The two females ran over saying ‘don’t call me babe’,” the police prosecutor said.

The court heard Bawden then launched a vicious attack grabbing her hair and punching the woman repeatedly in the head.

Ms Vander Myle also allegedly piled and punched the woman several times in the back of the head.

Bawden, who was unrepresented in court pleaded guilty to one count of assault.

Following her arrest, Bawden told police the victim had been “arcing up at them” and that she had been “provoked”.

Magistrate Koula Kossiavelos rebuked Bawden for the “brutal” attack telling her it did not matter if she thought the victim’s friend was a paedophile

“We don’t right a wrong with another wrong — you need to be very ashamed,” Ms Kossiavelos said.

“She didn’t sleep that night because she was worried about having a concussion.”

Because of her youth and lack of criminal history, Bawden received an 18-month good behaviour bond without a conviction.

Facing the same charge, Ms Vander Myle was also unrepresented and had intended to enter a guilty plea.

However, Ms Vander Myle was warned having a criminal history meant she was likely to face a more serious punishment.

Breaking down in tears in the dock Ms Vander Myle asked for her matter to be adjourned to seek legal advice.

She will next front court in April.
