A man who pulled a machete on a man for “looking at him” before violently bashing him at a popular Mount Gambier hotel has escaped a prison sentence.

Seth Corey Williams’, 19, shocking attack comes just two months after he was caught with a knife on Hindley St, after allegedly pilfering goods from the Falafel House in February 2023.

Though he was sentenced for carrying an offensive weapon he was not charged for the alleged theft.

The Mount Gambier Magistrates Court heard the victim is lucky he did not suffer any serious long term injury after Williams stomped on his head as he lay prone on the ground.

A police prosecutor told the court Williams and another man followed the victim from the Jens Hotel front bar into the beer garden on April 21, 2023.

Williams then pushed the man into a wall before he pulled the black 30cm machete that had been tucked into the waistband of his shorts.

“The defendant held the machete up to the throat of the victim,” a police prosecutor said telling the man “I will take your life C***”.

After Williams’ re-holstered his weapon, the victim attempted to walk away.

However, while trying to re-enter the front bar Williams rained several blows down on his head, prosecutors said.

As the victim lay on the ground, Williams brutally stomped on the man’s head, a court heard.

Williams pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated affray, two counts of aggravated assault, one count of aggravated assault with a weapon one count of carrying an offensive weapon and one count of illicit possession of prescription medication.

He also pleaded guilty to breaching a good behaviour bond for his February offending.

Kate Annells, for Williams, told the court her client had felt “intimidated” by the victim who had been looking at him while he played pool.

Ms Annells said Williams is a removalist who had come to Mount Gambier on a work trip, and had gone up to his room to grab the knife because he was in a strange town.

Magistrate Justin Wickens warned Williams a charge of affray attracted a maximum penalty of five years, while each aggravated assault charge attracted a maximum sentence of three years imprisonment.

However, because of his youth Mr Wickens’ handed Williams a three month and 10 day prison sentence, which was suspended on an 18-month good behaviour bond.
