A well-known SA/Victorian freight company has lodged a plan to construct a new transport depot next to a busy South-East highway.
South West Freight, a national servicing transport and logistics provider with principle depots in Mount Gambier, Millicent, Penola, Meningie, Adelaide and Melbourne, has submitted an application outlining plans for a new depot at 280 Jubilee Highway West, Suttontown.
The site is located on the western outskirts of the city, next to the Mount Gambier Garden Centre and just west of Endeavour Petroleum.
The proposed depot would be comprised of large workshop equipped with offices, toilets and storage; wash bays, a large warehouse connected to a two-storey office, heavy vehicle parking areas and a 100-space carpark.
South West Freight has been contacted for comment regarding whether its Mount Gambier site – located at 1 Graham Street – will be relocating to the new proposed depot or if it will serve as second site for the company.
The project’s planning report says business at the new depot would operate from 6am to 6pm Monday to Friday in the office, 7am to 5pm in the workshop, and 6am to 10pm in the truck depot.
“We forecast there will be 50 truck movements in and out of the site per day via 36 B-double movements, 12 tray top movements and 10 single truck movements,” the planning report said.
Inclusive of truck drivers, there will be about 30 staff who operate from the site.
Forklifts will be used in the warehouse between 6am and 4pm and compressors between 7am and 4pm.
A noise suppression mound is to be constructed along the western boundary of the property to lessen noises coming from the site – which neighbours some dwellings located along the nearby Wandilo Rd.
Public submissions for the application close on September 13.
